She looks to be thinking about what he said. “Maybe, but you’ve never smiled like this before.”

He tickles her, and she screams and laughs as her entire body wiggles, hardly trying to get away.

“Good morning,” I greet, walking over to sit down beside Capree.

“Katrina, are you my sister’s mommy?” she asks me, coming to sit down on the other side of the small playpen.

“I am.”

“I’ve always wanted a sister, so thank you.”

My eyes tear up. Charlotte is the most adorable little girl I’ve ever met. She’s so full of life, energy, and kindness. “No need to thank me.”

She gets up, running off, and yells, “I’ll be right back!”

“I have a doctor’s appointment this morning. I don’t think I mentioned it before,” I say, not wanting him to think I purposely didn’t tell him.

“I’ll take you to it.”

I look up. “Are you sure? Don’t you need to work?”

“What I need to do is take my wife to the doctor.” Once again, his green eyes are so intense as they bore right into mine.

My heart flutters at what seems like his protectiveness, and I smother my smile. Him taking me to my doctor’s appointment must mean he cares aboutme. And the way he’s been with Capree and Charlotte is so tender that it’s hard to look at him in the same light as before. I’m seeing a completely different side of him that was hidden.

“Can I come, Daddy?” Charlotte asks as she reenters the room. She has a book in her hands.

“No, baby.” He crosses his arms, leaning his back against the couch.

“Is Capree going?”

“She is,” I answer cautiously and crawl toward her.

“Then I’m coming too,” she demands while crossing her arms like her dad, the book still in her hand, making it awkward. “I’m the big sister, and I have to look out for her. You said so yourself, Daddy.” She’s mimicking his body language perfectly, and I have to stop myself from laughing. She has her father’s mannerisms nailed.

I can see he’s wavering and trying to think of how to explain it to her.

“You’re right, Charlotte. We need you.” Her smile grows when Demetri caves. She wraps her arms around me, and I pick her up.

“This is a book my mom gave me, right, Daddy?” Then she tells me in that sweet voice of hers, “I want you to read it to Capree.”

I look over at Demetri to make sure this is okay before I say anything. He gives me a small nod, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat as he swallows.

“I would be honored,” I whisper to Charlotte, giving her a squeeze. “And maybe you should be with me while I read it to her, to make sure I’m doing it right.”

At that, her smile takes over her entire face.

Ididn’trealizewhata big entourage I would have coming to this appointment. Before, it was only ever me, but now that our girls and Demetri are with me, a bunch of his men have come as security as well. I went from a party of one on every other visit to a party of nine, since Demetri also insisted that our nanny come to help with anything we might need.

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. We crowd around the reception desk while the rest of the waiting room takes notice of our arrival, making me self-conscious immediately.

“Maybe you all should wait in the cars,” I whisper to Demetri.

“Out of the question,” he replies as he turns his attention on the poor receptionist. “We will see the doctor immediately.”

I watch as she visibly gulps at the sight of my husband. “Yes, sir.” She stands up, and her hand points out the direction for us to follow.

“Your men will stay out here, right?” I question when I realize my husband might be crazy enough to try to bring everyone into the exam room. The thought of everyone seeing my lady bits has me scared shitless.
