Isitatthebar of Demetri’s club, The Horsemen, with a glass of cranberry and soda, while my husband takes care of business downstairs. I used to love the feel of pounding bass, with the sound of a good beat. But now… I don’t miss this lifestyle of partying all the time at all.

Max stands to the side, his eyes on me all the time. I have two guards with me whenever I leave the house—Max and one of Demetri’s men. Both of them give off these scary vibes, and no one comes to talk to me. I’m thankful for it, since I’m not interested in talking to anyone. I think I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I’ll never be normal. That term has been on my mind a lot lately, since everything seems like it is, when I know it can’t be in our world. I keep waiting for something to happen. My happiness never stays long, yet I want to cling to the hope that I’ve finally made my life the way I dreamed it would be.

I stand, and my bodyguards move instantly. Raising a hand, I make them halt. “I’m going to the restroom.” I point out the multiple cameras around. “There’s no need to follow me.” Vadim walks into the room and I add, “Vadim is here, too.”

I love the conversations Vadim and I have whenever he drives me around.

“Vadim, it’s been a whole thirty minutes. You must have known I needed saving from my spy sucking bodyguards.”

His eyes crinkle with happiness hearing my voice. “I hope you’re behaving yourself,” he teases.

“Only around you.” I playfully fling my hair and point my nose upwards playfully.

“That’s only because you know my secret.” He leans in winking, while looking around the room to make sure no one is paying attention to our conversation. I look over my shoulder and my bodyguards are too far away to hear anything. It has become very apparent that Vadim doesn’t play for the same team as Demetri.

Vadim has quickly become the friend I need while my family continues to put up a fuss about me and my choice of husband. Not that I’ve heard anything since Luca was forced to apologize to me. It helps that I know Demetri will never become jealous that I seek his driver’s friendship out.

“I need to use the washroom, but soon as Demetri is finished, I’m ready to go when he is.”

“Sounds good. I just wanted to check in with you. You’re welcome to wait in the car.”

“No. I refuse to let the spies chase me out of my husband’s club. Anyway—” I lean in so only he can hear me. “—my husband can’t refuse a dance with me if I’m in the car and not in here.”

I give him a smirk as I search out the washroom. Pushing the door open, I see the room is packed with women, some retouching their makeup, others chatting in bathroom stalls. I’m forced to wait by the door. Eva steps out of a stall, and I can’t help the instant jealousy that wraps around me.

“Look who the cat dragged in,” she singsongs toward me. “What’s with the scowl? You know, before you came along, I was the most important person in Demetri and Charlotte’s life.” Her high heels stop, and the tips touch the toes of my own. “He will resent you if you can’t get over the fact that I’m held in their hearts too.”

“I haven’t forced Demetri to do anything concerning you. Maybe you’re just not as loved as you thought.”

“You know, I thought maybe we could be friends once I saw how he looked at you.”

“That willneverhappen.”

“You’re a stupid girl. I’m probably the only one in your corner. Pushing me away will only lead to your demise.” She shoves past me, stepping on my foot. Instantly, my body shakes with rage. Eva’s and my interaction shouldn’t bother me the way it does, but it’s almost… instinctual.

I quickly finish with the bathroom, and when I come out, the club is even more packed with people. In order to move, you have to rub shoulders with the person next to you. I’ve barely made it halfway to my seat when my elbow is grabbed, and I’m forced to turn. Sophia is holding a circular tray.

“Katrina, what are you doing here?” She looks around the crowd.

“I’m here with my husband,” I reply with attitude, still angry about our fight at the grocery store.

She nods. “Interesting place for a date night. You need a drink?” Her expression is warm, and she gives me a small smile.

I shake my head. “I have a cranberry soda waiting for me.”

Without another word, her feet start moving, and this time it’s my hand that goes to her arm. My guilt for our fight washes over me, and I know I need to make things right between us.

“I’m sorry about the day in the supermarket. If you have time, I want you to meet Demetri.”

“I’m too busy tonight, but don’t think you’re off the hook. I’ve seen glimpses of Demetri around before, but I want to meet him as your husband.” She leans over, kissing me on the cheek, and I continue on my way. I get to the counter, and my drink is handed back to me. I’m sure his men are safe, but old habits die hard. I can’t finish a drink I wasn’t holding the entire time. I wonder if Demetri knows many of the staff who work here.

I sense my husband before I see him walking through the crowd. People part for him to walk toward me in a straight path. There’s no pushing or shoving Demetri to get through; the sight is really amazing.

“Sorry I took so long.”

I fix his shirt collar and notice a speck of blood on it before giving him a kiss. I can’t help but love the power he radiates. I should hate knowing that he was downstairs hurting someone, but the thought excites me more than anything. It makes him even sexier to me.

The thought makes me pause, so far removed from when I thought I wanted someone normal. My heart should be hurting for whoever is down there. I should be demanding him to show mercy. Instead, my mind comes up with its own replay of what went on downstairs.
