My phone beeps, and I pull it away to see Katrina’s name showing as an incoming call.

“One hour, Eva,” I say, annoyed, before I switch to the other line. “Katrina.”

“Did I call at a bad time?” she asks immediately, picking up the tension in my voice. I’m about to tell her no, that it was Eva who put me in a bad mood, but I don’t want to upset her before our date. Tonight needs to go exactly how I planned.

“No.” I soften my tone. “What’s up?”

“Uh, just wanted to know what time I need to be ready. That’s all.” It sounds like a lie, putting me on even higher alert, and I look at the monitor in front of me. Katrina is at home and safe. I switch to the other feed I was looking at before she called. It shows recorded feed, her brother meeting with Siya before he entered my club the night before.

“Six.” I pause the video, both of their faces clearly visible.

“Can’t wait,” she replies. “Talk to you later.”

My fingers dance across my desk as I plan an appropriate course of action.

I don’t know how much time goes by with no clear vision.

My phone goes off again just as my thoughts begin to form something good, but then I lose it in the distraction.

Can’t anyone do their job without calling me?

“What?” I bark.

“We lost Katrina, boss.”

“What do you mean? I just talked to her.” My pulse roars to life as I realize it’s been a while. “For how long?”

I can hear the bodyguard breathing heavily into the phone. “A half-hour, maybe an hour. We’re not sure what time she left the house.”

“Is Max Mancini with you?”

“One second, boss.”

I’m placed on fucking hold, and my eyes grow large with annoyance. No one is capable of doing a simple task these days. My chest tightens as I’m forced to wait. The urge to jump into my car and go look for her is overwhelming. I try to think logically. The guards will find her faster than I can.

I’m going to have to put Vadim on her. She seems to like him and doesn’t pull any shit when he’s with her.

“Max just called. He has his eyes on Katrina. She’s out shopping. Apparently, she left us a note at home.” Relief floods my hyperaware nerves, but I’m already too on edge to relax as I hang up the phone.

I try to push thoughts of Katrina aside, and focus on my work that continues to refuse to run smoothly.

I call my cousin into my office. “What do you think this means?” I show him the video of Luca and Siya. I’m only half able to concentrate. My blood pressure is still sky-high from the thought of losing Katrina.

“I think he’s pissed about you blowing up his wife’s business.” His finger points to the video, and I notice he has blood under a nail.

“You need to clean up better after your interrogations.” I point to the DNA he’s carrying around.

“You know me—you say jump, and I come running. I’m not done yet.” He chuckles.

“What’s going on with Eva? Did you ever ask her out?” I ask, glancing at my watch to see I need to leave soon to meet up with her.

“We had our first date a few days ago. I think she could be the one.”

I squeeze his shoulder. “I’m happy to hear that, man. You deserve happiness.” I pause, debating if I should mention Eva’s phone call or not. I look at my cousin, who’s more like a brother to me. We were raised that way; our mothers were always together.

“Have you talked to Eva today? She called me a while ago and it was odd.”

He shrugs, not looking concerned. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to her today, but I’ll make sure to check on her. I wanted to bring her flowers anyway.”
