“If you let me go, I could try to have a boy for you.”

She glares at me. “I don’t need Demetri anymore. Which means I don’t need you. Mikhail and I will be the ones at the top once we get rid of the two of you.”

“Speaking of my cousin, is he on his way?” Mikhail asks.

Sophia walks up to him and places a kiss on his lips. He wraps his arm around her waist to pull her in, and they practically devour each other’s face. It’s disgusting—too much tongue and teeth.

“He did just as we planned. Didn’t even bother checking the house and is on his way.”

That ember of hope reignites once again. Relief surges through me as I realize the girls won’t be here.

“Any troubles at the house before you came?”

“Nope. The girls are in the car, and we can move them in once we have Katrina in position.”

They kiss again, and I turn my head away, looking at the blackened window. No natural light enters the house. I’m left sitting beside the bones of Demetri’s first wife, my hands tied behind my back. I feel like a damsel in distress. I don’t want to be this way, but there’s no escaping. I should have run before we came into the house.

Mikhail grabs my shoulders, pulling me up. I cry out from the shock of the movement. “Time to get this party started.” He pulls me toward the door.

“Don’t worry, bestie. He promised me I get to kill you. It’s going to be my wedding present from him.” Sophia grins as they drag me outside into the forest. This time, I kick and scream as loud as I can. His hands slip from me, and I fall to the ground. My face hits it hard with my hands tied behind me.

I scream again. Mikhail’s strength is far greater than mine, and as he rights me, I can feel blood seep from my nose with the radiating pain in my face. My feet kick out at him, all while I’m screaming bloody murder at him.

“You should save the fight for when you have an audience. No one will hear you here. You’re wasting your energy.”

He slams me into a tree, winding me. My chest is tight, making breathing difficult. Sophia takes advantage of me being stunned and tapes my body and legs to the trunk of the large tree, the bark scraping off my skin.

“Five minutes,” Sophia sings.

“I’d tape her up a few more times.”

She looks me up and down. “Naw, I want her to believe she can save herself. It will make the defeat in her eyes so much greater.”

I struggle against the tape. She’s right; I could escape if I worked hard enough. I wiggle more.

“Stop. Save it for the guest of honor,” she orders as Mikhail hands her a gun.

I wiggle harder, and my feet free themselves. My hands are almost there… when she hits me with the gun. The pain courses through my entire body, and my vision goes black.

Ihearvoices.Myhead hurts, and it takes a second to remember I can’t move because I’m taped to a tree. There’s more yelling, and this time I open my eyes. My vision wavers back and forth until my eyes land on a furious Demetri. He’s more beautiful than I remember, and he’s holding two guns, both trained on Sophia.

The smell of fire makes me take in my surroundings more. Then I remember what Sophia said. They were moving the girls in after I was in position. The girls…

“Demetri, the girls are in the house!” I scream, and his attention turns to me.

His eyes grow wide.

“Who are you going to save? Katrina or the girls? There’s only time for one.”

“Save the girls!” I yell, but Demetri’s eyes flick from the house to me. Indecision is written all over his face. “Get them first, then come get me.”

He raises his gun at Sophia, but she just laughs.

“If I die, the house explodes.”

I look around. Where did his cousin go?

“Mikhail and Sophia are working together,” I warn him, not knowing what he learned between the last time I saw him and now.
