“To think I only got to plan one wedding,” my mother says, sending her pout around our large table.

“You raised your daughters to be too headstrong,” I reply, and it gathers a few chuckles.

“You know, Katrina, you and Demetri never had a real wedding. Let me plan one for you guys.” She smiles and bats her eyelashes.

Wishful thinking.

I answer immediately, “No.”

“There’s nothing wrong with keeping your mother happy,” Demetri whispers into my ear.

“That’s because you’re trying to become her favorite, so she’ll stop picking Luca.”

“Why not, Katrina?” she asks but looks at my husband. She knows he’s the weak link.

“I love the marriage we have. If we redo it, it will only jinx us. The answer is no.” I can’t help that I feel so strongly about this. I want to keep my mother happy, but I can’t do it at the expense of my marriage.

“Sorry, Mrs. Rossi. I can’t fight my wife on this one. If she changes her mind, I’ll make sure you’re the first one to know.” She smiles at Demetri. She has him wrapped around her finger.

“Capree just took her first step!” Charlotte yells, carrying Capree in her arms. There are cheers and claps all around.

“What?” I holler, standing up. I’ve been working on this with her for weeks. Gia’s daughter started walking months ago, before she was a year old.

Charlotte hands me her sister, and Capree giggles with everyone’s eyes on her as I stand her on her feet. She stays up before she plops on her butt, and there are words of encouragement. My daughter is loving the attention on her. I swear she’s playing this out.

“Come to me, Capree.”

She immediately smiles at her daddy’s voice. With zero hesitation, she stands and takes two steps before falling back on her bottom. Demetri watches with so much delight on his face as he holds Charlotte on his lap.

Charlotte is cheering her little sister on, and she hops off Demetri’s lap to come hold my hand. “I love you, Mom,” her tiny voice says, and it has me turning all my attention to her, my eyes wide. She has never called me Mom before. I pull her to me and hug her.

“Demetri, did you hear that?”

He looks up from Capree, who has made it to him, and furrows his brow. “What?” he asks in confusion.

“I told her that I love her!” Charlotte laughs.

“She called me Mom,” I say in awe.

Demetri picks up Capree, his face soft, and drops to the floor to pull us all in for a hug.

Who knew this scary Bratva man would end up having a heart so loving and generous? We may not have the perfect love story, but it’s ours. And I would never change anything about it.
