Chapter Eight

Logan had been trying to stay on both Jack’s and Payton’s trail. With him being only one person, it was impossible. He wished he had enough money after alimony to be able to find someone to help him. At the end of the day he barely made enough money for himself. After being in to visit Payton’s office and talking to her assistant, he realized that if he was going to have any true success with this case, he would need to enlist her help. The only thing he truly knew about women was to flatter them, then seek their help. By keeping tabs on Payton he already knew Shannon’s day-to-day routine at the office. She was very predictable; she arrived on time each morning and left precisely at 4:30 each evening.

Waiting a block away from the office, he waited for Shannon to arrive to open up for the day. He carried a Starbucks coffee and muffin in hand, hoping she would take to his politeness.

Seeing Shannon’s arrival, he scurried toward her, and caught the door just as it was closing behind her. “Good morning,” he announced his arrival. “I was in here the other day. Logan,” he introduced himself once again in case she forgot, then he put the food items on her desk.

“Hi.” Shannon was annoyed at his presence but kept her fixed smile. “What can I help you with today?”

Logan shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other, becoming aware that his drinking from the night before had begun to seep through his pores as he began to sweat a little. It had been a while since he tried to flatter a woman. Lately, he would just get drunk and ask a woman straight up if she wanted to go home; this was different. “I figured that you might not have had time to eat.” He gestured to the coffee and muffin he left on her desk.

Pursing her lips, she eyed him. Was he stalking her? There was no getting rid of this guy. “Thank you,” she responded, trying to be polite, and began to tend to her computer, hoping he would go away if she accepted the Starbucks. She had just reapplied her lipstick before heading in; she lightly touched her lips to the paper cup, trying not to lose all of her lipstick on the rim. Taking a sip, it instantly cured her caffeine headache. She gave him another smile, holding up the coffee to thank him again.

“Ah, you’re welcome.” He stood there, not knowing what he should do next. Sleeping with women was so much easier than trying to talk to them. Fidgeting with his hands, he decided to leave, as he didn’t know what to do from here. Next time he would have a better plan than just breakfast. Stupid—lacking a plan. He should have thought out what he was going to say. He nodded his head as if to say goodbye and left the office.
