Ryan took the photo from her hands. “This is Donald Hess; he is one of the Bernard Castle golden boys who began running operations here in America. He has done very well here.”
“Donald Hess?” Now she was confused. Her head was spinning with all of the information from today. She was a smart girl; why was she not following what Ryan was talking about. They seemed to be on two different frequencies. How did their communication break down so much since they had seen each other?
“From the look of things I would say your sister has more than professional dealings with him.”
“Ryan, I don’t think you understand…” How on earth was she going to tell him that the Donald Hess he was talking about is her boyfriend, the father of her unborn child.
“Lilly, how can you sit there and say I don’t understand? Look at all of the proof—signatures, photos, bank accounts—they all link Payton with Donald Hess and show she has played a part in at least three fraudulent dealings. It’s about time you wake up and see your sister for who she really is!”
Lilly’s eyes were filling with tears; she tried to hold them back as much as she could. Her world had been torn apart in a matter of minutes. The man who she once loved more than anything in the world was telling her that her sister was the worst type of person, and her next closest person—Jack—was worse than her sister. She had lost her only support network. Life as she had known it would never be the same. Somehow she had to carve out a new life for herself and the baby. In this moment she didn’t know if she could even take care of herself, never mind another human being. The only thing she was certain of was that she wanted to cry.
“It looks like you’re right; my sister is a monster like you always wanted to prove to me. But that wasn’t what I was just talking about when I said you didn’t understand.” Lilly’s voice was extremely calm; it shocked her how in control she felt, other than the tears about to spill down her checks. “The man you are calling Donald Hess I know as Jack Hewitt. He is my boyfriend and a real estate agent in New York. That was what I was trying to say a moment ago.”
