With that Lilly left, eyeing her sister one more time before she pulled away. Lilly could not help but feel a nagging sense of responsibility. She didn’t like the idea of Payton sitting with Dixon. After all, he had a girlfriend, and Lilly knew her sister’s conniving ways.

Dixon lightly touched Payton’s shoulder and asked if she wanted another drink.

I can’t believe that I finished it so quickly.Looking up from her empty drink she smiled at Dixon and gave him a nod. It must be a mixture of being stressed, happy to see Dixon and that the gin is so refreshing. As much as she tried she could not lessen the goofy grin she wore.

Dixon and Payton continued to chat away; the conversation was easy between them, and the sexual tension didn’t seem to disappear, much like an electrical storm firing back and forth, causing the atmosphere to light up around it. She could feel her cheeks growing warm—the inescapable drunk cheeks.

As the two of them talked—about everything and anything—Payton could not help but notice how they continually touched each other. It was very flirtatious, more than in just a touchy-talker way, this seemed even more special. At one point Payton had her hand on his thigh, to try to steady herself as she was laughing so hard. These little touches sent electric shocks through her body. Their flirtatious, carefree conversation took a more serious turn. Dixon talked about his girlfriend and some of their problems, along with the stress in his life right now. Then, for some unknown reason, Payton began telling Dixon of her problems.

“You think you have it bad? I have it bad. I slept with my little sister’s boyfriend.” There came the verbal diarrhea flooding out. “I didn’t even know it was her boyfriend until tonight. It would crush her if she ever knew.” Payton hadn’t wanted Dixon to know this information, because she was afraid he wouldn’t like her any more. She just felt so safe with him in this moment and felt she could trust him. Nervously, she glanced at him as she hid behind her long hair that hung in front of her face. She prayed that this would not backfire and maybe something good could come from this conversation.

A tear ran down her cheek as she tried to hold her emotions inside. After all, they were sitting at a bar with people around them. How she wished they could be somewhere private.

Dixon slowly wiped her tear with his finger, and then moved part of her hair behind her ear. His touch felt so gentle, kind and caring as he tried to comfort her. “Look at me.” Dixon moved her face with his hand ever so lightly. Payton was not sure what to say or do, so they just stared into each other’s eyes. She could see Dixon moving his head ever so slowly toward her, and she began to mimic his movements until they met in the middle, and ever so lightly their lips touched. Payton savored every second that the kiss lasted until she could feel Dixon slightly moving away. Payton was speechless. The kiss was wonderful. She could feel her body tingling. Why couldn’t they be somewhere no one else was? Dixon’s hand was still on her shoulder and they must have been only an inch apart. As Dixon slowly rubbed Payton’s shoulder, to continue to comfort her, she could feel his wrist slightly brushing up against her breast.

Silence hung between them, both unsure of where to go from here. Both had so much going on in their lives—Dixon had a girlfriend and Payton was dealing with her mishaps. Secretly she crossed her fingers, praying that a little time would allow them to deal with their busy lives, and open up space for the two of them. This was the closest she got to asking a higher being for a little nudge in her favor. Payton had never before put so much trust in fate, as she was doing right now.
