Because she knew Tyler was going to stop. And she knew she wouldn’t cope.

Tyler pulled back. Now he was smiling, his expression warm as he brushed her hair behind her ear. A second later, he gave her a firm kiss that almost had Kristie breaking down.

“Thank you.”

Kristie pulled back.

“What are you thanking me for?”

“For doing this for me. I know the next few months are going to be very tough on your body.” His thumb brushed her cheek. “But I’m going to look after you. I’ll make sure things are smooth sailing for you. Whatever you need, you’ll get it.”

But you won’t be able to give me what I want.

“Thank you.” Kristie swallowed. “I’m going to wait until I’m out of the first trimester before I tell Steve. I’m going to tell him that it was a one-night stand, and I don’t know the guy’s name.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’d rather he be angry at me for being an idiot than be angry at you for doing this.”

Tyler frowned.

“I can handle him.”

“I doubt it. I know my brother. It’s best to keep this quiet.”

“And afterwards?”

Afterwards. When Kristie would give birth but then there would be no baby around, and Tyler would suddenly have gained a child. People would be asking questions. Right now, she didn’t want to think about that. She just wanted to get past the initial stages before she made any decisions.

As it was, she needed some time to get used to the fact she was going to be pregnant. Things were going to be very, very different for her. And Kristie also had to brace herself for telling Steve the truth. She didn’t need her brother hovering over her and dictating what she did and didn’t do.

She just had to find the courage to do it.

“Kristie? You okay?”

Tyler jumped away from Kristie so fast Kristie almost fell off her chair. Shauna was coming into the room, looking from Tyler to Kristie with a suspicious expression. Kristie shifted back onto her chair.

“Shauna. I didn’t hear you knock.”

“I did. You clearly didn’t hear me.” Shauna arched an eyebrow. “You okay?”

“I’m fine.” Kristie turned to her desk and started putting her pregnancy paperwork into the folder. “I just had a dizzy spell. Tyler was just making sure I was okay.”

Shauna looked like she didn’t believe that. She stared at Tyler, who held up his hands.

“I didn’t do anything. Promise.”

“Right.” Shauna turned to Kristie. “Do you want me to take over Tyler’s treatment? You can go outside and take a breather.”

“I can…” Kristie protested, but Tyler cut her off.

“You’re still really pale, Kristie. I don’t think you should be in here when it’s this warm.”

Kristie stared at him, but Tyler had already turned away and was stripping off his t-shirt. Damn, she would never get bored seeing him like that. Shauna touched Kristie’s shoulder.

“Kristie? Tyler’s right. Get some air, try and cool down. Then maybe you should think about heading home.”

“But…”
