“Do you want to change it?”
“Do you?”
Tyler didn’t say anything for a moment. Kristie had to check that they hadn’t been disconnected.
“Tyler?”
“I’m still here. Let’s discuss that when I get home. Just a couple of hours, okay?”
“Okay. I’ll be there.”
Kristie hung up quickly before she said anything else. She didn’t want to start saying something that would end up revealing how she felt. For a start, that wasn’t something they should be doing over the phone. And she was also scared that Tyler would reject her. Kristie knew she couldn’t cope if he did that.
“Who were you talking to there?”
Kristie jumped, dropping her phone onto the floor. Steve was coming across the room, watching her with an intense stare. Kristie clutched a hand to her chest.
“God, Steve! Could you knock when you come in?”
“I did.”
“I didn’t hear you.”
“You were clearly more interested in talking on the phone.” Steve raised his eyebrows. “I heard talk about the baby. The father, I take it?”
Kristie felt lightheaded. This was not how she wanted him to find out.
“That is nothing to do with you, Steve.”
“I think it is.” He bent over and picked up her phone before Kristie realised what he was doing. “You were talking to Tyler Young, weren’t you? He’s the baby’s father.”
Kristie didn’t respond. Steve growled.
“You’d better tell me the truth, Kristie. Is Tyler Young the father?”
“He is.”
Kristie braced herself. Steve’s face was getting really red.
“What the fuck, Kristie? What possessed you to fall into bed with my teammate? And a guy like Tyler Young as well?”
“What’s wrong with him?”
“He’s not the guy for you.”
Kristie snorted.
“How do you know he’s not the guy for me. I probably know him better than you.”
“Oh, really?” Steve sneered. “What did he say to seduce you? It must have been good if you fell for it. Did he declare his love for you, or something?”
Kristie flinched at that. It felt like Steve had just slapped her. She shot to her feet.
“If you must know, this was planned.”
“What?”
“Tyler wanted a baby, but he didn’t want the relationship that came with it. He asked me to carry the baby for him, and I said yes.”
