Darren looked up. Nathan was walking along the row, shrugging into his jacket. He looked like he hadn’t slept in a while, his jaw showing he hadn’t shaved again for some days. Darren sat back in his seat.
“You finished for the day?”
“Yep. The guys are set. I shouldn’t be needed until the day before the next home game next week.” Nathan sat beside him with a heavy sigh and flexed his fingers. “Damn, I swear every time I dig my fingers into someone they get stiff while the client ends up relaxed.”
Darren grunted.
“I’m not surprised. You do make it feel like you’re digging deep.”
“At least I am working. I swear you’ve spent more time out here than you have done in your office.”
“How would you know?”
“Because I just went by and couldn’t find you.” Nathan paused. “I did see Marigold, though.”
Darren swallowed. He had only seen her once when she came into work. The sight of her left him feeling like he couldn’t breathe, and he had locked himself in his office. When lunch came, he had left without looking in her direction. If he had, he would have stopped.
“She seems to be doing okay.”
“I don’t know about that. She’s looking a bit pale.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Definitely not her normal self.” Nathan frowned. “Trey Lofthouse hasn’t been in contact, has he?”
“If he has, I don’t know about it.”
“How would you not know? You’re the manager of this damn team. You should know the ins and outs of things.”
Darren bristled.
“You make it sound like I’ve been watching her every second of every day.”
“If I were in your position, I certainly would.” Nathan gave a half-shrug. “Then again, that’s just me.”
Darren regarded him quietly. Nathan had also not been his usual self. He was a little more withdrawn, not being the lighthearted guy that he knew. The man was different.
“Things okay with you and Jake?”
“Why do you ask?”
“Things are a little...tense at home. There’s nothing outward, but I noticed that you two aren’t as affectionate as usual.”
