“Are we able to see her later? Will she allow us to see her?”

“She’s resting right now, but she does want to see you.” Allison shrugged. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m going with optimism. This is something that hit her hard, so she just needs time.”

“Three months have passed since we started this. It should have been dealt with long ago.”

“And that’s all just Marigold’s fault?”

Darren grimaced.

“No, of course not. But we shouldn’t have been tiptoeing around each other.”

“And you need to find your balls, Darren.” Allison shot back. “You’re the team manager with the best record in the last three seasons, and you have no idea how to ask a woman out and tell her how you feel. I thought I was a mass of contradictions, but you’ve topped me.”

“Now that really isn’t helpful.”

“It wasn’t meant to be. Tell her you love her, and then Jake and Nathan. Fix it so the three of you aren’t fighting. Because I can see it happening if only one comes to Marigold, the others are not going to be happy.”

“Can we really make it work?”

“Cousin Myra makes it work. Those guys actually compliment her. And, in this case, Marigold compliments all of you.”

“She does?”

“I think she does. Once you four talk and get things sorted, you’ll find it better than you think. You can make it work.”

Darren had come to think that maybe they could. After they found out about the pregnancy, the three of them had gone home in a daze. They had been up for most of the night talking about what they were going to do. None of them were planning on walking away, and Nathan was adamant they didn’t find out, otherwise it would create resentment. Darren had pointed out they would know if the baby was Jake’s when the kid was born, but they all agreed not knowing for now was better.

They had laid out what they wanted from Marigold. And what they wanted from each other. Jake and Nathan were a couple who had been through this plenty of times, but Darren wasn’t. He hadn’t been sure about sharing the woman he loved with other guys. But the more his friends talked to him about being in a relationship like theirs, the more he understood. He felt a little more comfortable going into what they were planning.

He just hoped that Marigold was okay with it all.

“Don’t look so scared, Darren. It’s okay to become a parent. Even if your position is a little unorthodox.”

“It’s very easy for you to say. You’re not pregnant.”

Allison grinned.

“I’m sure it’ll happen soon. Then you’ll have two grumpy pregnant women to deal with.”

“Please, don’t do that.”

Allison laughed.

“Don’t worry, it’s still early days for us. We haven’t discussed anything yet.” Her smile faded and she glanced over her shoulder. “You might need to deal with this. Lofthouse is here.”

“He what?” Then Darren remembered. “Oh, right. I asked him to come in.”

“Why?”

“You’ll find out.” Darren stood up. “Just show him in, Allison. And keep the door open.”

“Sure thing.” Allison paused. “Do you want me to let someone know he might need to be escorted out of her?”

Darren smiled.

“I’m sure Mr Lofthouse will do as he’s told. He is a grown man, after all.”

Allison arched an eyebrow, but she left the office, and Darren heard her speaking to Trey outside. He also heard the bastard ask after Marigold and where she was. Darren felt the anger bubbling up. He did not get to see Marigold after what he did.
