“Sure. Take your time.”

Marigold didn’t know about that. Everything seemed to be out of her hands right now.

The car journey wassilent until they reached Marigold’s apartment. Darren kept looking over at her, but she was just staring out of the window. She hadn’t moved her hand away from his, which Darren felt was a good sign.

It was hard to see Marigold like this. She was normally so strong, so forthright. Finding out Trey wasn’t faithful had taken a knock to her confidence, and even though she wasn’t about to admit it, she was rather shaken by what happened at the party. She was off-balance, which was probably what Trey wanted.

Darren would never understand the mentality of someone who would approach someone they had hurt with the intention of hurting them more. It didn’t make sense why a guy who had made the relationship implode would do something to make the woman the bad guy. He still remembered the way Trey looked at Marigold; he leered at her, almost as if he was expecting Marigold to be fickle enough to want him back. Even though she had told him it was done.

Trey and Robyn Grey were far too alike. They wanted things done their way. Get the former partner back and then be the one to end it. Just so they could feel less bad about it.

At least Marigold would never go back to him. Darren was sure about that. Marigold wasn’t the type to go back after she had been hurt the first time.

Trey could fuck off, as far as he was concerned.

They finally got to Marigold’s apartment building. Nathan pulled up outside, and Marigold unbuckled herself.

“Thanks for this, Nathan. I appreciate it.”

“No worries, love. Anything to help.”

Darren bit back a growl. For some reason, he wasn’t keen on Nathan speaking like that to Marigold. He knew it was just Nathan’s way of talking, but Darren didn’t like it when it came to the woman sitting beside him.

What was wrong with him?

Marigold paused, her hand on the door handle. She glanced at Darren before looking at Jake.

“Where are you guys going now? Not back to the party?”

“I don’t think any of us are in the mood now.” Jake gestured at Darren. “Although Darren does still need to wear the Santa costume.”

Darren shook his head.

“Not the time, Jake.”

“I was meaning to ask about that.” Marigold arched an eyebrow at him. “Why did you want to be Santa?”

Darren could feel his face getting warm. He cleared his throat.

“Drinking game. I lost. That was the punishment.”

“Seriously?”

“What? We’re allowed to make bets.” Jake laughed. “Glad it wasn’t me. Whoever heard of a black Santa?”

“I’m sure you would have rocked the look.” Nathan teased. “You look good in anything.”

Darren groaned.

“I really don’t want to hear that now, guys. I hear enough of it at home.”

“Well, when you offered to let us stay with you while we were looking for a place, you agreed to take everything else regarding us.” Nathan pointed out.

Darren glared at him.

“Just be thankful you pay rent and you actually keep the place clean, otherwise I’d be saying something else.”
