CHAPTER8

Becca’s eyes went wide. “But… did you say ‘soulmate’?”

He nodded.

Shaking her head, she whispered, “That’s not possible.”

Raze planted his expensive dress shoes against her floor, hands folded behind his back. His handsome face gave nothing away as he said, “I assure you, it is.”

“No.” Her voice rose a little louder as everything she thought she knew turned on its head in an instant. One second, she was expecting Raze to dump her. The next? “You don’t understand. I’m a demon. I’m not one of Blane’s subjects, either. I wasn’t born like this. I sold my soul, Raze. I told you that.”

She did. Becca made that perfectly clear from the beginning. Even when their early attraction turned into something more, she never once made promises to Raze that she couldn’t keep. As his employee, she was more concerned with the power imbalance at play. He was one of the Angels of Sin City, with more power, money, and influence than anyone else Becca knew—save the cruel male who owned her soul with a contract she couldn’t breach.

Years ago, she swore off being so impulsive. Swore off getting in over her head with charming males, too, but that was the thing with Raze. He wasn’t charming. At first, he seemed cold and calculating, though Becca knew better now. He was loyal and protective, and—she had to admit—more jealous than she realized at first. But charming? Not even a little.

That was part of the reason why she allowed him to seduce her in his firm way. Because he never turned any charm on her, because he never pushed her further than stolen kisses and dinners out on the Strip when he guided her out of the hotel as her bodyguard, she thought he was just upholding his end of their deal.

Still. No denying that starting this… whatever they had… this thing with Raze had been an impulsive decision. Becca hadn’t regretted it, though, even when her gratitude toward Raze easily turned into affection. She liked him, probably cared for him more than she should, but that was as far as she was prepared to take it. Eventually, Raze would turn his steely blue gaze on the next helpless damsel in distress, Becca would have to hope Lucifer was too distracted with his evil schemes to come after her, and the last few weeks in Sin City would be a distant memory.

That’s all they could be.

So why was Raze coming to her now to tell her that she was his soulmate?

Becca wasn’t exaggerating when she said it wasn’t possible. Maybe if she’d been born a demoness like Ariel, serving the immortal demon king Pazuzu—though he went by Blane Puzu these days—then she might have believed Raze; born demons were more powerful than the demons Lucifer created, and they had a lifemate they spent ages searching for. When it came to Becca, though? Part of selling your soul to the devil was actually giving it away.

Lucifer owned her soul. Signed, sealed, delivered—she gave it to him years ago. And, without a soul, how could she be any being’s soulmate?

Especially one of the royal angels?

And not just a prince, but Raze?

“So?” Raze raised his eyebrows, the only hint of emotion on his sculpted face. “I still have one. And, from the moment we met, my instincts have been telling me that you’re it. You’re my soulmate.”

“I—” Becca was suddenly dizzy. Was the room spinning, or was that just her thoughts? “What does… Raze, what does that mean? What do you want from me?”

“I want you for life.”

“But you’re immortal.”

“Fair enough.” He nodded. “Then I want you for eternity.”

Eternity.

Becca blinked.

“I should’ve told you before, but I…” He paused, seemed to think over what he was going to say, then added, “I didn’t. I didn’t know how to tell you. I didn’t know how you’d react. I hoped you’d take it well.” A small frown as he watched her back away from him. “I’m not sure you are. What’s the matter, Becca? Don’t you want to be with me?”

“I—”

He hardened his jaw. “I love you.”

“I… I know. You told me that already.”

Raze waited. When she wasn’t quick to repeat his words back to him, he seemed to stiffen further. “I know this is… unexpected. And I don’t want you to feel as if we have to finalize our soulbond right now. I’m willing to wait for you for as long as it takes.”

“Because I’m your soulmate,” she said weakly.

He nodded. One single decisive nod.
