CHAPTER8

The way he called her partner.

The way he’d basically been stalking her for a month.

The easy way he gave her his name before letting her go that first night—even after she was caught with the loot on her, a rookie mistake if there ever was one.

Not to mention how he looked at Polly the night he saved her from Esther…

Soulmate.

She couldn’t believe it. At thirty-four years old, she was still perpetually single, having hook-ups and one-night stands whenever she felt the need to. Despite her lovers, she’d never found one that she wanted to stick around. After all those years of fending for herself, it was better that way.

And now this redheaded demoness wanted her to believe that she was fated to spend the rest of her life with Sam if she accepted him?

One problem, though: Sam hadn’t been the one to tell her. Becca had.

Forgetting that she teasingly insisted that he pay for lunch, Polly reached in her purse. Grabbing a couple of bills from her wallet, she tossed them on the table before getting up. She could already hear Becca apologizing, swearing up and down that she thought Polly knew, but she drowned her out.

Because no… no, Polly hadn’t known.

Because Sam had never said a word.

He was out there somewhere. Lurking like he always did. She could sense him, and if that should’ve been Polly’s first clue that there was something between them, she had chalked it up to him being an incarnation of Death. Surely everyone had been able to sense the shadows clinging to him?

Obviously not.

Now that she knew the truth, she gave him minutes before he was after her. She was human; he was an angel. She had to rely on her feet and public transportation while he had fucking wings. She’d need every minute of her head start to get away from him, and even that wasn’t enough.

He chased her all the way home. As Polly sat in the backseat of the car she ordered, she angled her neck, watching the sky. She felt him there, even catching sight of him every few seconds as his camouflage winked out.

Becca said that the key was only one part of returning the royal angels’ waning powers to full strength; until they were, losing control of his camouflage was just a single side effect. It was no wonder that he was willing to pay her to steal that key back from Lucifer. The angels were desperate.

When it came to Sam, though? To break the curse, he also needed his mate.

He needed her—just not bad enough to fucking tell her.

Torn between being excited at the prospect of being Sam’s and furious that he kept it from her, Polly climbed out of the car, intent on locking herself inside of her apartment where she could sit down and think.

Sam was already standing in front of the building, his beautiful white wings spread behind him, a dark look twisting his features.

If it was anyone else, Polly would be shaking in her tennis shoes. But it wasn’t. It was Sam, and she knew instinctively that the dark look wasn’t for her. It was for himself.

“Move, Ace,” she commanded. “Then fly away. I’m not in the mood to talk to you right now.”

He gulped, but stayed planted in her path. “Becca told me that she let slip the truth. Don’t tell me you can’t see why I kept it to myself for the time being. I knew you would run, Polly. I knew you would reject me.”

“Reject you? Shit. You didn’t even give me a chance to see how I would feel about, oh, I don’t know… being your forever mate! Sue me if I didn’t jump for joy when I had to hear the truth from someone else. I get it. We don’t really know each other, and that’s fine. But you said I could trust you.”

“You can—”

“Don’t know about you, but lying by omission is still a fucking lie, Sam.”

He gritted his teeth. “I didn’t lie.”

“No? I asked you why you were following me. You made me think it’s because you thought I was damaged goods. That that was the only reason you took an interest in me. And now I find out that you knew all along I was yours? Seems like a big omission to me.”

Sam opened his mouth, letting it click closed when he couldn’t find anything to say to that.
