If he ever had the chance to fuck her, Sam was beginning to think he’d die from pleasure.

But, first, he had to get past this meet. Though Polly didn’t seem to care, his agreement to pay her for getting their golden key back was a weight on Sam’s shoulders. Last week, she mentioned that she would do it for the challenge alone; that, more than anything, made Sam believe he might honestly have a chance of claiming her completely one day in the future. Of course, dumbass that he was, he insisted on honoring his bargain, trying not to flinch when Polly’s disappointment slapped out at him.

He was getting to know her better every day, and he was still fucking up.

Good thing he had forever to make it up to her…

When Polly put a tremble in her bottom lip as she admitted to Lucifer that she was Death’s fated soulmate, and that she was coming to him for help to escape Sam, it took everything he had to stay hidden. They banked on Lucifer sensing him on Polly and arrogantly assuming that Sam wouldn’t be lurking just out of reach.

Of course, no one would dare trick the lord of Hell, right? Oh, no. They would only cower.

Which was precisely why Polly was pretending—God, please let her be pretending—that she was prepared to sell her soul to Lucifer to be free from their supposed matebond.

As Sam watched, his stomach a mixture of knots, Lucifer fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

Turning his deep voice to a coo that had Sam clenching his fists at his side, Lucifer said, “Anything to save such a pretty human from one of my old enemies. Samael doesn’t deserve you, and I think we both know that.”

Polly sniffled, nodding her head. “He… he scares me.”

Sam had to tell himself that this was what they practiced. Still didn’t make it any easier to hear.

“Because it’s one of the princes you seek to escape, I’m more than willing to make a deal. What is it you’re after?”

Here we go—

Because the pair of them decided it wasn’t worth Polly getting close enough to Lucifer before discovering whether or not he was still wearing the talisman around his neck, they came up with a different plan. Sleight of hand would only work if she was sure he had it; otherwise, they were wasting their one opportunity to trick Lucifer.

Sam was awed by the way his tricky little human’s mind worked. When it came to stealing, it wasn’t just about using her nimble fingers to grab. She needed to plot out every alternative, while also taking the pathology of her victim into account. Sure, she could just take something, but the challenge was doing so without them ever pinning it on Polly.

She wanted Lucifer to hand the key to her after showing it off. And no matter how many times Sam begged her to explain how she was going to get him to do that, she just shrugged impishly and said, “Trust me.”

After the way she forgave him for breaking her trust, he figured it was the least he could do.

“I’ve heard about you,” Polly said to Lucifer. “I know you’re going to want my soul for helping me, and that’s fine. I’m willing to sign it over in exchange for the angels’ missing talisman.”

When Lucifer drew himself up to his full, impressive height, Sam thought that Polly might’ve pushed him too far. But all he did was stroke his pointed goatee before saying, “And why would I do that? What makes your soul worth such an item?”

“It’s not just my soul. If I sell it to you, then Sam can’t have it, right? Without him claiming his soulmate, it doesn’t matter if he has his key or not. He needs both to break the curse.”

Lucifer’s laugh was low. Evil. Cruel. “What a diabolical mind you have. You’ll do well to serve me in the Pits. But if you’re willing to sell your soul to me to keep it out of Samael’s hands, why do you need the talisman?”

Polly shrugged. “Because he wants it. And if I have it, that’s something else he can’t have. Now, where is it? I have to make sure you’ve got it before I agree to anything.”

“Of course. I know my reputation. I’d never expect you to take my word for it.” Dipping his hand beneath his tailored black shirt, Lucifer tugged on a golden chain. At the end of it, Sam saw the talisman for the first time in millennia. “Is that what you want?”

Sam willed Polly to say yes.

She nodded.

Letting the key settle against his chest, Lucifer flicked both of his wrists. In one hand, he held a scroll. In the other, a red pen.

“Standard contract,” he explained. To anyone else, Lucifer with his icy blue eyes and thick black hair pulled back in a queue was the epitome of a businessman. Only another celestial being could sense his eagerness to trap Polly in a binding agreement like that. “Your soul for the key. Sign here and it’s yours.”

There was no need for that. Lucifer already proved he had the key. Now that they had both seen it, Sam was ready to slip into the next stage of their plan. He would suddenly appear in order to distract Lucifer, giving Polly the opportunity to act like she was afraid of him. She’d bump against Lucifer, grabbing the key and making her escape before he realized what she had done.

At least, that’s what Sam expected to happen—before Polly changed their plan.

Before he could stop her, she accepted the scroll from Lucifer. Up until the second she signed her name on the dotted line, Sam was sure she was continuing her act. By the time he realized what she had done, it was too late.
