Polly might have turned the tables on the lord of Hell, but Sam knew better. When Lucifer disappeared in that second column of flames, it was a strategic retreat. He’d find some way to make Polly pay for taking the talisman.

Would her atheism protect her a second time?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Was Sam willing to stand back and watch her risk herself again?

No fucking way.

Call it a nesting instinct, but Sam had to bring Polly home with him. The need to get her safely inside of his room at the hotel was so pressing, his wings took over on their own accord.

He wasn’t really surprised. Raze had done the same thing, too, when he whisked Becca out of Lucifer’s reach. He’d understand; if Raze did, so would Micah. Whether he immediately called his brothers and told them he had the talisman, or he waited until he could assure himself that Polly was all right, it didn’t matter.

Soulmates always come first. And Polly? She’d claimed him as hers.

And now, if she was ready for him, he was going to finally claim her for real in turn.

With his beloved soulmate tucked against his body, Sam flew faster than he ever had before. Just having her close gave him more power than he’d had in years; holding her close was like a sudden jolt to his celestial aura. No one down below could see them as they flew, not that Sam gave a shit. Not even a little. All of his focus was on getting his soulmate back to his room.

He didn’t even waste time landing on the rooftop. Aiming for his balcony instead, he gentled his tight hold on Polly before he landed with a soft thud, throwing open the sliding door that led straight into his bedroom.

As Sam tucked his wings back inside of him, he loosened his embrace, letting out a rush of air when he saw that while her eyes were screwed shut, she was smiling.

“You can open your eyes, baby,” he rumbled softly, lifting his hands so that he was resting his palms on her shoulders. “Welcome home.”

Polly blinked before shoving her curls—windblown and wild—out of her face. Her pretty green eyes widened when she realized that she wasn’t back at her apartment.

“Home?” she repeated. “This doesn’t look like my place, Sam.”

Sam gulped, then gave her a slightly hesitant smile. “Maybe not. But it could be. Or we could stay at your apartment. I’m not picky, baby. I’ll go wherever my soulmate goes.”

“Soulmate, huh? Have I met her yet?”

He knew she was teasing. God, how he loved that she felt comfortable enough with him to do that. No one ever teased Death—until Polly.

“Maybe,” he said, lowering his hands again so that he was cupping her elbows. Leaning back, he tucked his chin into his chest, making it so that he had her total attention. “She’s about your height. Fucking gorgeous with an ass I dream about. The prettiest blonde curls, and her eyes… I could drown in those eyes forever if she let me.”

Tilting her head back, Polly invited his kiss. After he obliged, she nuzzled her cheek against his chest. “You’re not so bad yourself, handsome.”

“Be careful that you don’t let my soulmate hear you talk about me like that. She took on Lucifer, you know.”

“And won,” Polly pointed out. “She sounds pretty kickass.”

“Believe me, she is.”

“Probably a good lay, too.”

If he hadn’t already been hard during their entire flight back to the hotel, the way she reached out to stroke him through his pants would’ve done the job—or maybe how husky her voice went as she said that.

A lump lodged in Sam’s throat. It was one thing to know that he could only truly claim his soulmate by having penetrative sex with her. It was another to have her in his bedroom, stroking his cock, talking about being a good lay.

He knew exactly what Polly was doing. Once again she was using a combination of humor and straightforwardness to make her own desires clear without pushing him.

Just then the ball was in his court.

Did he return volley, or did he miss her easy lob?

Soft, questing fingers unerringly found the head of his cock straining against the material of his pants. Sam jerked, swallowing a moan as Polly waited for his answer.
