CHAPTER5

Micah loved his brothers. He was fanatically loyal to them. The first time he proved it, he gave Sam the key that Lucifer ended up stealing from him. The second time was when he Fell alongside them.

Over the last three thousand years, he’d proven it again and again. It worked both ways, too. Raze was the overprotective brother, Sam the ne’er-do-well with the deceptively white wings. And Micah was the youngest one that they loved to tease, but who they protected fervently.

Since Sam was the one who first guessed that Micah’s soulmate was out there, he was the one that Micah called. He had to use suggestion to get the first human he saw to let him borrow his phone, cursing under his breath when his aura shorted it out before it had rung even the one time. Leaving one of his business cards with the man so that Micah could pay for a replacement, he approached another human—and then another. His panic and concern were causing his aura to flare unpredictably, and it took six phones before he managed to get through to Sam.

An hour later, he sensed his brother’s approach. Though he’d asked Sam to come by himself, he wasn’t the least bit surprised when a second soul pinged against Micah.

He shielded his gaze as he searched the sky above. As if he sensed Micah’s stare, Sam winked into sight, Polly clinging to him as he flew them both toward the ground.

Sam touched down, releasing Polly as soon as her feet were on the sidewalk.

“Thanks, Ace. You wait out here with your brother. I got this.”

Wait—what?

“What’s going on?” he asked. “Sam, I asked for your help because I need you to use your abilities to see what’s wrong with my soulmate. For all I know, Lucifer’s still lurking nearby. What if he decides to target Polly and Cinder now that they’re in the same place? She should be in the hotel.”

“Aren’t you cute?” cooed Polly. “Don’t worry about me. The way I see it, I’m still working toward getting my twenty-five grand. No key, no payday. And it doesn’t matter that I basically married my client now. This is a matter of professional pride. I’m gonna get that key, then I’m getting out of here before Lucifer does show up. Sam can help you with your mate after that, but he promised I could get my chance with the key first.”

Micah’s head shot toward his brother.

Sam held up his hands. “When you get to know Polly, you’ll realize just how… persuasive she is. Sorry, bro. I never stood a chance.”

Polly preened.

Micah sighed. “Okay. Raze will be happy if we can get the key. But after that, I want Sam to tell me if she’s…”

What?

Dead? Alive? A reincarnation?

There was something wrong. It wasn’t just that she was using a new name, either. Lucifer admitted that she didn’t remember Micah though she should’ve—and he made it seem like that was all her doing because of a “betrayal”.

Micah couldn’t figure it out. But perhaps a former angel of death could.

“I can answer that for you right now,” Sam said. “First, that’s definitely your soulmate in there. You might be too close to the situation to notice, but she wears your aura like a second skin like Polly does mine.”

Really? “That must be the bond.”

“You feel it?”

“Yeah,” Micah admitted. “It’s how I found her here in the first place.”

“Makes sense. She’s definitely yours. And she’s definitely alive. Maybe that’s why I never really felt her dead. I’m not positive, but I think that she didn’t die so much as Lucifer brought her to Hell all those years ago. You said something about a deal with him, right?”

“She sold her soul to increase her powers. That’s what Lucifer told me.”

“Well, tough shit for Lucifer. You’re her soulmate, Micah. When you claim her, you claim her soul. It’s like Raze and Becca. To get to her, he’d have to get through you.”

He would have to anyway, thought Micah. Now that he knew that she was alive again, he absolutely refused to let anything happen to her—even if she didn’t remember him.

Polly watched the back and forth between the brothers with interest. When Micah just nodded in answer to Sam, she clapped her hands, drawing their attention over to her.

“Now that that’s settled, I’m going to go inside and see about getting that key. You two stay out here. I’ll be right back.”

“The doors might be locked…” Sam began.
