“What’s that?”

“If, and this is a very huge if…” She pauses. “But if you got me pregnant, I might change my mind.”

“Pregnant,” I say with a nervous laugh.

“Hey!” She swats me with the brochure. “You’re the one suggesting we move in together.” She grips the brochure with both hands and looks down at it. “I’m just taking it a few steps further in my mind and saying it out loud.” Her eyes lift to mine. “Or don’t you want to have kids?”

“Kids?” I stare down at her. “With the way I live, I’ve never really thought about kids.” That’s a lie. When I walked into her apartment and saw the gun pointed at her, I saw my life with her flash before my eyes. It included an altar, vows, and kids.

She saved my life, again, that day.

“Well”—she smiles at me—“I think it’s high time you start to let yourself dream, Brett Daxon. Dream about kids and a happily ever after with me.”

“Kids?” I nod. Hearing it out loud makes it more real and achievable with her, the woman I love. “I knew I was screwed the day you told me you were coming at me with everything you had.”

“The only thing I didn’t have was you,” she says, eyes twinkling up at me.

“And your determined ass got that too.” I lean in for a kiss. “And I’m thankful for it every day.”

My cell rings.

Eyes locked with hers, I grab my cell. “It’s Cole. I gotta take it.” I swipe the screen. “Yeah?”

“Brett,” he says, voice cracking.

Sensing something isn’t right, I snap my spine straight. “Cole, what’s wrong?”

“It’s Julia, Brett. She’s fucking dead.”

“Where are you? Are you at the escort?”

“Yeah,” he breathes the shaky word into the cell.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah. But she’s dead.”

I nod at Cassie to ease the worry in her eyes.

“Are you sure, Cole? Did you check her?”

“No.”

“How do you know she’s dead?”

Cassie moves toward me and places her gentle hand on my shoulder as if she senses the fear in my brother through me.

“Remember that night we came down the stairs and saw Dad lying on the couch after Mom shot him.”

“Yeah.” I nod.

“Remember his eyes?”

“Yeah, Cole.” I pause, recalling the dreadful day that changed our lives. “I remember,” I reply, looking into Cassie’s eyes. The place I found the light to dim my darkness.

With every part of me, I love her…
