She glances at his hands. “Did it hit you there as well?”
“Yes.” He holds his grin, not looking my way.
I told the asshole to come up with a better story.
“Well,” she studies him as she had Lix. “It must have been one hell of a beam.”
“It was, but I took care of it.”
Her eyebrows come together. “How so?”
“I cut it up and used it for firewood.”
“I see.” She nods. “Good for you. I’m sure that beam got what it deserved.”
“It sure did,” he says with a teeth-revealing smile.
“Did you need something, Cassie?” I break into the conversation before Lix tries to make the moves on our new boss, and Cole’s euphemisms get any more obvious.
“No. I just wanted to stop by to see how things were moving along. I’m glad I got to meet all of you.”
“We’re making good time.” I turn my head and say over my shoulder, “Lix, is the west wing all set?”
“Yeah, Erickson is tidying it up now.”
“Why don’t you and Cole give him a hand, and I’ll walk Cassie out.” I come back around, my eyes landing on hers.
“But I—”
“We got it. Nice to meet you, Cassie,” Cole says, then I hear a smack to a chest before their feet shuffle off behind me.
“They seem nice.”
I heft my shoulders and head toward the exit. Nice, isn’t the way I’d describe them.
She follows beside me out to the parking lot.
“Do your brothers, you know…? Are they escorts as well?”
Fucking Cole! I’m going to give him another black eye to match the one he already has.
I stop and stare out into the lot. “My brothers are good workers, and they will do an excellent job getting the project done.”
“Okay,” she says, obviously catching on.
I’m not telling her anything more.
Omission is a fucker. It leaves unwanted doors open.
I should lie to her.
Something inside forbids me to do it.
“About the other night—”
“Don’t worry about it,” I cut her off, checking out the vehicles, anything but her and those explicit eyes. “It won’t cause any trouble between us while I’m on the job. I already forgot about it.”
“You did?”
