The elevator to my flat dings. It’s either Cole or Lix. No one else has the code to get up here.

The ding is the only warning I get before one of my brothers barges into my place.

Towel drying my hair, I glance up at the doors as they open.

Breathing suspends. My hand falls from my head. I grip the wet towel before it drops to the floor.

Cassie’s bright blue eyes lock with mine as she walks into my apartment.

Standing in nothing but a pair of unbuttoned jeans, I stare at her as the doors close behind her.

“How’d you get up here?” I ask, finding my voice while still standing half-naked.

And vulnerable.

Her eyes roll over my exposed body. “Cole was in the office. He let me in.”

Of course, he fucking did, and he did so without warning me. I’m going to kick his ass.

I toss the wet towel on a chair.

“Nice place.” She nods, looking around my prestigious apartment.

I’m sort of a neat freak. I like order, including at home. Right now, I’m thankful for it.

“Thanks,” I grumble, uncomfortable about her being alone with me. I’m terrified she’s going to come at me with all she’s got.

“So the bedroom is in the back?”

“Yeah,” I say, even more uncomfortable. “And the bathroom. We each have a flat.”

“Yes. You mentioned that.” She rounds back to me.

Her eyes brush over my naked chest, lingering for a few seconds before coming back to my face.

Unsure what to do next and wondering why she’s here, I cross my arms over my chest. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes.” She adjusts her purse on her shoulder.

I cautiously watch as she walks toward me in a sheer white blouse and high-waisted pants. She’s mastered the art of making modest business attire look sexy as fuck.

She stops in front of me. Giving my bare chest another inspection, she tilts her head back until her sparkling eyes meet mine. “I have a dinner meeting tomorrow with a potential client in Sarasota.”

I gaze down at her, not missing the hitch in her voice when she mentioned Sarasota, where she lived with Glenn.

It’s the first glimpse of fear I’ve seen in her eyes since that dreadful night.

She’s scared to go back there.

“You don’t need to worry about him,” I say, unable to tell her the truth this time.

Glenn is dead. He’ll never hurt her again.

She peers up at me for a few seconds.

The silence enhances my heartbeat thundering in my ears. Whenever I’m around her, my senses go out of whack. I can’t think straight. My body gets heated and clammy all at the same time. It fucks me up.

Her eyes lower to my mouth, pausing for a moment before venturing to my neck and chest.
