I stop, get out my keys and look up at him. “Thank you for coming with me tonight. I really don’t know anyone here. Not anymore. It was nice to get out.”

“It was my pleasure,” he says, not sounding pleased at all.

I lift my chin, demanding eye contact.

He doesn’t deny me what I want.

He views me from veiled eyes. I wish I knew what he was thinking beneath those mysterious hooded eyes.

“Want to come in?” I ask with a steady voice.

“I think it’s best if you go inside and go to bed, Cassie.”

“I know what is best for me, and that isn’t it, Brett.”

His heavy lids lower. “Then what is?”

I wager his challenge. “A drink and some company?”

“It’s late.” His husky tone, like his glistening eyes, peruse my ready body, convincing me he’s not ready to go. As hard as he might be trying to fight it, he doesn’t want it to end, either.

“Yes.” I swallow down my trepidation. “It is, but I’d still like you to come in.” I stare at him, leery he’ll decline the invite but not discouraged.

I’ll concur his fight. If not today, I will someday.

I lean forward, absorbing his essence. “I don’t bite,” I say with a slight giggle, trying to break his steadfast demeanor. “At least, not on the first date.”

His dark eyebrow arches. “This was a date?”

“Yes.” I grin. “It was for me.”

His upper lip quirks as if suppressing a smile.

His eyes flick to my mouth, then the naked skin exposed on my chest just above my dress, and back to my mouth.

Damn, I love the way he looks at me. It’s intense, leaving me with so many unanswered questions. Good ones I haven’t wanted to ask myself in the past year.

“Okay, Cassie.” His eyes lift slowly back to mine. “I’ll stay for one drink.”

“Great.” I twist around and quickly unlock the door, not giving him the chance to change his mind.

He follows me inside. I feel my shadow merging with his close presence. My dark silhouette longs to reach out and touch him.

I got him in the door. Now, what am I going to do?

He’s not like any other guy I’ve invited in for a drink.

He’s more complex, doubled down with an abundance of overpowering substance.

He stands for more than any man I’ve encountered.

To look at him, you wouldn’t know he’s on a mission to help, save, and give hope to women who feel like they have none.

Setting my purse on the table, I reach for two glasses and turn around. “Is wine okay? I don’t have any beer or anything.”

“Wine is fine.” His large, dark presence fills my small kitchen as he watches me tend to our drinks.

“Here you go.” I hold out the glass, trying to hide my shaking nerves.
