“You are. They all are.” His eyes bounce around the room as if he’s trying to put what I said together. “I can’t believe he never said anything.”

“So you do what he does?”

“Yes.” His eyes land on me.

The façade of his young age lessens. His cute smile disintegrates, and I see him through new eyes. He’s like Brett. He’s a strong, able-bodied man. Under that sexy little smile and savvy words, there’s an honest, strong, and honorable human being.

“Thank you, Lix.” I touch his arm. “I don’t know where I’d be without you and your brother’s escort service. Brett saved me that night. I don’t know if Glenn has it in him, but I thought he might kill me.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through that.” The darkness in his eyes lighten. “I’m glad Brett was there for you.”

“Me too.” I smile. “Could you please not mention this to him? I promised that I wouldn’t talk about it, not to him or anyone else.”

“I can’t do that, Cassie. For all of this to work, in order for us to do what we do, my brothers and I must be honest with each other. But apparently, Brett broke that rule, and more than once.”

“I think he did it because he was trying to save face for me.”

“No.” His lips thin. “I know why he did it, and that’s not it.”

Shoulders set high, he walks out of the room.

Chapter Fourteen

She hasn’t looked at me, let alone spoken to me in a week. She’s been at the worksite every day with Lix. It’s pissing me off.

I rejected her. I get it. That shit hurts. It wasn’t my intention. Fuck. I don’t know what my intentions were, but I knew I couldn’t fuck her.

Not to mention, she rejected me when she pushed me. Said stop. Everything inside ceased. I felt like the monster I saved her from. As if I was doing something she didn’t want. Caught up in the moment, I missed the signs.

Emotions overshadowed my instincts. No woman ever made my body tremble as she had. She morphed me out of this world from a mere kiss.

The shit going through my head, what I wanted to do to her, would’ve scared her more. I’m glad she put a halt to it.

It confirmed what I thought before putting my hands on her beautiful body.

She’s not ready.

“Did you call Ramsey back about the Skyler job?”

“No.” I drop the bills in my hand on the desk and lean back in the chair, gazing up at Cole. “I don’t think we can get it done in time, what with the GrandMark project.”

Cole leans against the file cabinet. “We’re on schedule.”

“Yeah, but I don’t want to rush it.”

“I hear ya.” He nods. “The GrandMark is a big deal.”

“I’ll call Ramsey. See if he’ll push back the date by a month.”

“Sounds good.”

The office door swings open, and Lix barges in, eyes blazing and fists clenched. I haven’t seen him this pissed since our first Julia run. Damn, that was a mess. We nearly killed the guy. We all agreed only one of us would do the escort from that point on. The anger and rage of seeing a woman in that kind of situation is a definite trigger for us. It reminds us of our mom and what we all helplessly watched her go through, too young and weak to save her.

“What the fuck!” Lix stops and slams his fists on my desk. “She’s a fucking Julia!”

Cole grabs his arm. “What the fuck, Lix?”

Lix tears away from Cole’s grip, giving him a death look.
