“No.” He seizes me with unwavering eyes. “You could take something else.”

“What?”

“Her second chance,” he says, hitting home with the comment. “I gotta go.” He brushes by me and walks out the door.

Cole’s head maneuvers back around to me. “How does he know about Miller Lane?”

“Fuck.” I run a hand through my hair. “I didn’t tell him.”

“Neither did I.” He looks at me for a second. “Do you think Cassie knows?”

“No.” I shake my head. She wouldn’t have asked me to go with her the other night if she knew her abuser was dead.

She can’t know.

“What are you going to do about her?”

I glance at Cole. “Nothing. You heard the little shit. He’ll come after me if I do.” I laugh.

“Yeah, like that’s going to stop you. Wouldn’t stop me.” Cole chuckles. “Why don’t you just ask her out like on a normal date or something.”

“I don’t do normal. Hell, none of us do. How can we with the life we live?”

“We don’t do normal because we’re afraid of getting caught. But Cassie already knows about us, which eliminates that reason.”

“Yeah, it’s the how she knows that’s difficult to ignore.” I walk over to my desk to grab some papers.

“I get it.” He nods. “But it doesn’t change the fact that you’re into her, and I’m fairly sure she feels the same way about you. Why else would Lix get so pissed? They’ve been spending a lot of time together. She probably told him how you two met.”

“I don’t doubt it.” I turn around.

“Could be what he meant when he mentioned Miller Lane?” His brow lifts.

“Hope so. I don’t want him to know any part of what went down that day.”

“Yeah.” Cole nods.

“Well, I’m heading up to my place. Let me know when Lix checks in after the escort.” I hit him in the chest with the papers before heading out the door.

Chapter Fifteen

I grab my ringing cell, reading the name of the incoming call—Lix.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Cassie. It’s Lix,” he says in a slow and slurred voice.

“Lix? Are you okay?” He sounds drunk or something. Not his usual perky and ready to conquer the world self.

“Yeah. Yeah. I’m at the hospital.”

“Is everything—”

“Oh, yeah. I’m good. Honest. I just need a ride. Can you come get me?”

From the sounds of it, he’s not going to give me any more information over the phone. “What hospital are you at?”

“St. Petersburg. I’m in the ER.”
