My heartbeat speeds up.

“That’s why you want me.” His hand slips up the back of my neck.

He fists my hair as he had the other night, igniting everything inside me.

“You know that I’m not going to try to fool you with that shit.” He bends down until our lips almost touch. “You know I’ll give you something else.” His view drops to my mouth.

The slow burn of the fire I started finds its way inside.

“Something you need,” he says.

His almost touchable words taunt my mouth.

I stare at his lips. “And what’s that?”

“When you’re ready”—his eyes flash to mine—“I’ll show you.”

His lips press against mine for a mere second, but when he turns and walks away, like embers without a flame, the chaste, burning kiss remains with me long after he leaves.

Chapter Sixteen

I enter the office at the rear of the building.

Lix is watching Cassie roll some paint on the wall. “Yeah, that’s good.”

“Thanks.” She smiles at him.

Anger fuses my brain.

I rarely feel jealousy over anything, especially when it comes to my brothers. It’s strange and not right. I shake it off.

“Hey,” I call out. They both look at me. “Erickson is looking for you. He’s in the front.”

Lix turns to Cassie. “That’s good for today. We can finish up the rest tomorrow.”

“Sounds good.” She wipes her forearm across her face, smearing some paint there.

Fuck, she’s adorable.

Lix laughs, shaking his head as he moves toward me.

I put my hand out, stopping him. “You going to see Mom tomorrow?”

“Yeah.”

“Make sure she signs the papers Sofia sent her.”

“Will do,” he nods and leaves the room.

Cassie wraps the roller in a plastic bag and sets it on the ground. “Your parents live around here?”

“My mom is about an hour away.”

“What about your dad?”

“He’s dead.”

“Oh.” Her eyes soften. “I’m sorry.”
