“You should do whatever you feel is best for you, Cassie.” I kiss her forehead. “But whatever that might be, just do it and don’t ever look back.” I tap her on the nose and walk away before my heart explodes and all my feelings come spilling out.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

“Erica said to remind you that she’ll be here next week for the final walk-through,” Matthew says, taking the documents he had me sign.

“I’ll be ready.” I smile.

My eyes follow Brett as he struts by with one of the electricians.

He’s more than ten feet away, and I can smell him. From his scent right down to that wrinkle above his left eye that appears whenever he’s concentrating, my body appreciates him.

I know the wrinkle is there, and he’s not even looking at me.

With all the inspections and final touches in the past few days, it’s been like a circus here. It’s exciting and chaotic, but there’s been no time for me to talk to Brett about me staying.

He could be dodging the conversation.

I dressed a little provocative today, hoping he’d notice me enough to strike up a conversation. It’s desperate on my part and out of the norm. But when it comes to Brett Daxon, I’d move buildings, and apparently, I’d move to a different state for him.

I want to stay, and sure, I’d like to convince myself it’s because the opportunity to run the new location would be great for my career. The truth is, I want to stay for him. I want to stay because he wants me here.

Again, desperate.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

I know better than to allow a man to dictate my future. Let a man control the outcome of my life. Still, here I am, hanging on Brett’s approval. Screw that!

If I stay, it’ll be what I want and what’s good for me, just as he mentioned.

“I’ll get these to the office,” Matthew says, putting the proposal into his briefcase.

“They’re really good, Matthew. Hydra Skin is going to be impressed and pleased.”

“Thanks.” He beams. “Let me know if you need anything else.”

“Sure thing.” I smile. “Well, I better get back to work.”

Accepting the dismissal, Matthew nods and makes his way to the door.

My eyes skip over to Brett. With his arms crossed over his chest, he’s listening to the guy as the man rambles on about something I can’t hear.

Why won’t he look at me?

Enough of this shit. I need to concentrate on the task at hand. I’m running out of time to get this place ready.

I scoop up the brochures and take them into the showroom.

I need to stop letting Brett distract me. My career is on the line. If GrandMark doesn’t approve of the new office, I might have to look for a new job.

I shake my head. That’s not going to happen. I’ve kept the costs down, and I’m on schedule. The new office is perfect. The guys have done a fantastic job with the reconstruction of the building. It’s everything I imagined it would be. If anything, the Daxon brothers know what they’re doing, and they do it with grace and prestige.

“There.” I take a step back from the brochure stand to investigate my work.

When I hear the door open, I glance over my shoulder.

My breath catches in my chest. My eyes meet Brett’s.

He pushes the door closed and leans against it, taking me in with his breath-stealing view.
