“Me?”

“Yeah, it’s got an assortment of alcohol in it. It comes on strong, and before you know it—” She jabs the tip of her finger into my chest. “It hits you like a wild windstorm.”

“I’m like that?”

“Yep.” She drops her head, chin to chest. “You’re a variety of amazing things. You’re strong.” She grips my bicep and stares at it for a second. “And—” She raises her bobbing head. “Before I knew it, you knocked me over with your powerful storm.”

“I’m sorry.” I brush my knuckle under her chin. “I didn’t mean to make you fall.”

“Really?” Her nose scrunches, and her eyes squint. “You didn’t mean to make me fall for you?”

“You got me there.” I lift her chin. “That was definitely intentional.” I kiss the tip of her nose. “Are you ready to go?”

“Hmm.” She stirs her drink. “Depends.” She finishes the last of her alcohol and sets it back down. “Are you expecting me to be a good or naughty girl tonight?”

I gaze into her captivating eyes. “Neither.” I press my lips to hers for a long and savory kiss. “I just want you to be my girl.”

She stares at me for a moment, leaving me to wonder what she’s thinking. “Okay.” She nods her head. “I’ll be your girl,” she says with a smile.

“Come on, trouble. It’s time to go home,” I thrust out my hand to her.

She laughs. “You like trouble.” She takes my hand and stands, leaning into my body. “So that means you like me,” she says, baring all her white teeth.

The alcohol glistens in her amber eyes.

“That” —I take her hand into mine— “I do.” I walk her out of the bar toward my truck.

She stops at the passenger door and leans her back against it. I reach forward to open it. Her hand slides into my hair. She pulls me down, level with her face.

Her smiling eyes sober as the moonlight slips into them. “Cole,” she gazes at me for a few seconds.

I set my hand on the truck and sway closer to her. “Yeah?”

“I love you,” she says with a slight slur.

My head knocks back. “I love you.”

Her head tilts. “Was that repeat for processing?” She swirls her finger in the air. “Or do you need an explanation?”

“Neither.” I palm her face in my hands. “That was just me saying it back to you.”

“Oh.” Her sleek eyes gloss over. “That’s a new one.”

“Shut up and kiss me.” Laughing, I lean down and crush her sassy lips against mine.

Chapter 44

I toss my backpack over my shoulder and run down the stairs.

“Off to Cole’s for the night?”

I stop, finding Mom standing in the kitchen doorway with a cup of coffee in her hand.

“Yeah.” I move toward her. “I’ll be back after work tomorrow.”

“Okay.”She hefts a shoulder.

I slow my steps. “Mom…” I nibble on my bottom lip, uneasy about what I want to ask her.
