“Yeah. Luckily, the abuser was gone. Otherwise, Cole might’ve killed him. I think Cole went looking for him. Brett and I were glad to hear the cops picked up the guy the next day. He’s in jail now. Safe from Cole.” He chuckles.

“You think Cole would’ve hurt him?”

“I would’ve,” he says without blinking an eye as he pulls into the police station.

He parks the SUV and turns to me.

My eyes wander to the back seat. I turn to get a better look. There’s a baby’s car seat and a toddler’s booster seat. My eyes shift to Lix. “Do you have kids?”

“Fuck no.” He glances at the back seat. “They’re for the escorts. They come in handy.”

“I bet they’re difficult to explain to your dates.”

“Nah, I just tell them they’re for my nieces and nephews.”

“And they believe it?”

“Sure,” he says with a crooked smile. “You ready?”

“Yes. Willa sent Cole their names.” I pull out the napkin I found in Cole’s truck, where I wrote them down. “I’m supposed to say the guy showed up at the house with a knife looking for Amanda. I’ll keep you and your brothers out of it.”

“Sounds good.” He gets out, and we head inside.

A female police officer walks up to us. “Mr. Daxon.”

“Officer Starr.” Lix grins and points. “It’s Lix, remember?”

“Oh yes. That’s right.” She grips her belt, and her shoulders drop as if prepared for his animated character.

“It’s fancy meeting you here,” Lix says with that infectious smile.

The corner of her mouth pinches. “I was just thinking the same thing. Did you have another altercation with a mugger while out running?”

Lix’s finger strikes upward. “I was jogging, and no, my friend here needs to file a restraining order against someone.”

The officer’s eyes morph into seriousness as they sway over to me. “Are you okay?”

“Yes. It’s one of the women who come to my counseling sessions for domestic abuse. Her boyfriend threatened me.”

Officer Starr studies me for a long moment. “You can go over to that desk.” She gestures with her head. “And the officer will help you.” Her sleek observant eyes shift back over to Lix. “I called you for a follow-up, but you never returned my call.”

“Huh.” Lix’s eyebrows rise. “I must’ve missed it.”

“We got another call that night when you were out jogging in your jeans. We arrested a man for domestic abuse.” She glances at me. “I wanted you to come in for a line-up to see if it was the same man who attacked you.”

“Yeah, well.” Lix rubs his chin. “I didn’t see his face.”

“Yes.” The officer slowly lowers her head. “You had mentioned that.”

Lix looks at me. “I’ll be over there if you need me.” He points. “Officer Starr”—he swings his finger her way—“it’s been a pleasure.” He smiles and moseys over to one of the chairs against the wall.

I heft my shoulders and make my way to the desk.

That was strange.

I landed in Florida just two days ago, and so far, I’ve been threatened by a guy in a coffee line, a man looking for his girlfriend with a knife, and Cole. Granted, it’s not the same kind of threat. Still, my body goes on alert whenever I’m around Cole.

I’ve gotta get out of my current situation.
