“Yes. There is. And if you stop fighting it, you might find out why.”

“Fine.”

He laughs and kisses me on the head.

I settle into him and let everything but him flee my mind.

This is what I needed.

Not sex.

And somehow, he knew it.

I lie in his arms, feeling selfish, finding some comfort in knowing, like me, he is broken as well.

So fucking selfish.

The earlier choking tear escapes my eye.

Chapter 15

I close the hotel room door and start down the hall with Harper.“How’d you sleep?”

“Okay,” she says with a hint of sass.

Her eyes remain fastened straight ahead.

“Good.” I hold back my smile, getting a whiff of her. I pull the collar of my T-shirt to my nose. “Yep.” I slide my eyes over to her. “Smells just like you.”

“Lucky you.” She tilts her head.

“I think so.” I grab the door to exit the hotel and open it for her.

She walks past me with her head held high.

I’m glad my storytelling didn’t soften her spunk. I wouldn’t want her looking at me with pity.

“I get it.” I smile. “You’re still pissed at me for not having sex with you?”

“No,” she snaps, taking off to the parking lot. “But it would’ve helped me sleep better.”

“Really?” I stop to open the passenger door to my truck and gaze down at her. “You look pretty rested after sleeping in my arms all night.”

She sets her hand on the edge of the truck door glaring at me. No doubt searching for a witty comeback.

I lean down. Her eyes follow my mouth. “How about a good morning kiss?”

“What?” Her eyes flutter to mine. “I’m not going—”

I grab her nape, pull her to me, and plant my lips on hers. It’s quick but electrifying.

Her forehead creases. “Why’d you do that?”

“I told you, if you stop fighting it, you’ll know why. Now, get in. We have a long drive back.”

“You can’t just kiss me whenever you want!”

“Can’t I?” I smile and head over to the driver’s side, leaving her to deal with her outrage alone.
