“Okay.” I place my hand on her lower back. “Let’s go.”

Officer Starr stops us on our way out. “Mr. Daxon, I’m going to need a statement.”

“I’ll stop by tomorrow. She needs to go home and rest.”

Officer Starr surveys Harper. “Yes. That would be fine.”

“Thanks.”

“Harper!” A blond woman in her late thirties comes running at us. “Are you okay?”

“Yes,” Harper says with a weak smile. “Oh, Lisa.” Harper’s eyes flash to me. “This is Cole.” She touches my shoulder. “He and his brother Lix” —she motions to my little brother across the room— “showed up and helped handle the situation.”

“Cole? Lix? Yes. I think I’ve heard Willa mention you before. Thank you. We were all so worried about Harper.”

“I’m fine. I’m going to head out, but the police may have some questions for you.”

“Yeah.” Lisa nods. “Sure thing. I’m glad you’re okay.”

Harper smiles at the woman, and we head out the door.

Brett skids into the parking lot just as we are about to get in my truck. He jumps out of his car, eyes bouncing between Harper and me.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah.” I raise a hand.

Brett stops, places his hands on his hips, and bends forward, catching his breath. “Lix?”

“Yeah. He’s inside, but all good. The guy who’s been stalking Harper showed up with a gun. Harper texted me as it was happening. We got here in time to take him down.”

Brett’s eyes shift to Harper. “Yeah?”

“I’m fine,” she asserts with a quick bow. Her eyes open wide. “Shit! I’m supposed to meet a sponsor here today. I have to call Willa and tell her what happened.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Brett shakes his head, breath caught and rising to his full height. “I’ll reach out to Willa and explain what’s going on.” Brett scans me, some of the color returning to his face. “You taking her back to your place?”

“That’s the plan.”

“Good.” Brett regards Harper. “I’ll tell Willa you’ll call her later, yeah?”

Her lips press together with affirmation.

Brett touches her arm. “Okay. You call if you need anything.”

“I will,” she concedes.

We drive to my place in silence, get inside, and she sets her hand on the counter. She touches her fingertips to her mouth and starts to cry.

“Harper.” I rush to her and pull her into my arms. “It’s okay. You’re safe.” I run my hand down her long silky hair. “Just let it out, babe. Let it all out.”

“I’m sorry.” She sniffles. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

“Fuck.” I palm her cheeks and gaze down into her glossy amber eyes. “You’ve been through hell since you came back to Florida, but it’s over now. He’s caught. You don’t need to worry about him anymore.”

“I know.” Her eyes lower. “How do you do it?”

“Oh, babe.” I wrap my arms around her and pull her against me.
