“I’m here now.”

“Yeah, but you’re in the middle of something and—”

“Harper,” he says in a deep husky tone. One that would get me to do just about anything.

“I, well…” I kick an invisible object on the ground. “Do you want to get something to eat later?” My eyes rise to his.

His eyebrow kicks up. “Are you asking me out on a date?”

I tug on my shirt. “Do we have to call it that?”

“Yes. We most certainly do,” he says, maintaining direct eye contact.

“Fine.” I slam my hands on my hips. “Yes. That’s what I’m doing.”

“Why?” he asks, leaving his lips partly opened.

I slant my eyes. “Is this payback for the other night?”

“No. Payback is an act of revenge or retaliation. My objective is never to harm you. It’s the opposite. I want to make you feel good.”

“Okay.” I wave a frustrated hand. “That’s why I want to go out with you then because you make me feel good.”

“See, now was that so hard?”

“Everything with you is hard.”

“Stop making it that way, then. I’ll pick you up at seven.” He leans down, kisses me on the forehead, and walks away.

Chapter 37

Cole:Wear jeans and sneakers.

Me:Why?

Cole:For our date

Me:I asked you out!!

Cole:Yes, but I’ll take it from here. See you in an hour

Me:Fine!

I drop my cell on the bed, get dressed, and head into the kitchen.

Aunt Willa walks in. “Where are you heading out to?”

“Ah.” What am I supposed to say? Screw it. If I’m going to live here and see Cole, I might as well confess to it now. “I’m going out with Cole.”

“That’s good. You be nice to that boy.” She wags a finger at me as she gets a glass of water.

I scrunch my nose at her.

Maybe she should tell him to be nice to me. While I may not portray it, I’m fragile regarding matters of the heart.

And I have a feeling that’s what Cole is aiming for. My heart.

Honestly, I wish this shit was all in my head. I hope Cole’s like all the rest of the men, and he’s thinking with the head in his pants. Not the one positioned above his neck!
