He glances up at the dark moonless sky. “It’s perfect.”

“It’s pitch black.”

“Exactly. Perfect for what I have in store.”

Hand in hand, we walk around his place into the backyard. There are two lawn chairs in front of a lit gas firepit.

“Please.” He waves a hand. “Take a seat, beautiful.”

“Oh, you’re pulling out all the punches tonight.”

“On second thought.” His eyes twinkle in the fire’s light. “Take a seat, my sexy, sassy pants.”

“Thank you.” I laugh, sitting in the chair while loving this side of him.

He moves behind me, turning on the flashlight on his cell.

He fidgets with something on a table behind us. I can’t make out what it is.

“What are you doing?”

“You’ll see,” he says, pointing.

I turn to the lights illuminating the back of his flat.

“A projection screen?”

“Yeah.” He comes around and sits beside me.

“Are we going to watch a movie?”

“Something better.” He starts to play with his cell.

I lean back in the chair and wait.

“Ready?”

“I am.” I smile as a giddiness builds inside.

The large white square on the building comes to life with color featuring aTom and Jerrycartoon.

Hypnotized by the familiar cartoons, like when I was a child watching them with my father and brother. Fond memories flood me. My heart tightens, and tears well in my eyes.

Cole’s hand comes out.

I pull my clouded eyes away and meet his shining expression. Just when I thought this man couldn’t get any more gorgeous, he pulls out his heart and lights it up on a ten-foot screen.

I entwine my hand into his and squeeze. “Thank you.” My voice cracks. “For such a perfect date.”

Chapter 38

It’s been two weeks since Harper and I went out on our first official date. I’ve been smart enough not to bring up Tyler’s name. It caused problems the first time we slept together. I’m not trying to shut her down again. Not when she’s just beginning to open up.

I wonder if she’s seen him since she’s been back. The thought to ask has crossed my mind, but I know better. She’d give me some sassy ambiguous answer.

Not to mention, I’d come off as insecure.

I’ve learned some things about her. She always takes her left shoe off first. She talks in her sleep. She steals sugar packets from restaurants. The blue ones. She rubs her big toe on the floor when she’s concentrating. And she laughs when she’s angry. It’s more of a giggle, but you can hear her anger.
