“I hope so. He’s the one who has to let me out on the other end,” he said.

“What about me?” I asked.

“Your exit won’t be sealed. I still have a few friends on the inside,” he said.

“That’s news to me,” I said. “Why did you need to involve me and Malcom if you’ve got help?”

“I told you, if they got caught, they’d be killed. You can’t be killed as easily,” Spencer said.

“That’s comforting,” I said.

“It should be. Once I have Chris in a corner, and the other nobles bow to me, my friends in wait will help us.”

“Seems like a big part of the plan you left out,” I grumbled.

“It doesn’t matter for what you need to do. And if we don’t succeed, they’ll never reveal themselves,” he said.

“Why couldn’t they open the entrance you need?” I asked.

“Because it’s in the throne room. I have a feeling Spencer is aware of that tunnel and has it checked regularly. Especially since I used the tunnels to get to him last time,” Spencer said.

“So we’re using the same method that failed last time?” That was not reassuring.

“I improved on the plan,” Spencer assured me.

Suddenly, I walked right into him, nearly knocking me to the ground. “What the fuck?”

“Shhh,” Spencer warned.

“Why’d you stop without warning?” I hissed.

“We’re here.”

My eyes widened. “Here?”

“Step back a little, let me check.” Spencer turned on the light on his cell phone.

“Why didn’t we use that from the beginning?” The tunnel was illuminated and I glanced around, my eyes narrowed against the sudden bright light. The walls around us were brick and the ground was cement. I was pretty sure I saw a rat scurry away from the light. My stomach churned. What else was in here?

“Didn’t want to draw attention.” He took a few steps forward, then turned the light off.

“Stand back. I’m going to open it. If for some reason, it’s occupied, we’ll need to run,” he said.

“That wasn’t part of the plan,” I mumbled. Seemed there was a lot unsaid when this was initially discussed.

“We’re close to finishing this. Eyes on the prize, Lola. Get in, get the crown, find your way to the throne room. With that crown in your hands, nobody should mess with you,” he said. “Just act like you’re delivering it to the king if anyone sees you.”

“More details that would have been nice before,” I said.

“I’ll take that into advisement for our next heist,” he said.

“Great,” I mumbled.

“Here we go,” he whispered.

A door opened the same way the one had appeared in the garage. I held my breath as I tried to get a peek into the room beyond. My eyes weren’t used to the light and they watered a little. In the chamber beyond the doorway, I saw a canopy bed, a sitting area around a fireplace, and a bearskin rug. I wrinkled my nose. Who had a bearskin rug?

“Looks clear,” Spencer whispered.
