“You have visitors,”the nurse said, her lips in a tight line.

My brow furrowed as I looked up at her from my bed. I was sure that I’d misheard her. They were very clear on the whole no visitor thing.

She tugged the curtain around my bed open and two familiar males walked in. Two handsome faces, nearly identical, grinned at me.

Despite my confusion, I grinned at Matt and Zach. “So you can bribe the hospital staff.”

“Not exactly,” Matt said, moving to my bedside. He sat down on the edge, his grin replaced by a look of concern. “But our mom did make a phone call. She requested that we check on the status of her ward.”

His expression told me he wasn’t thrilled with his mom stepping in.

Zach lingered at the end of the bed, not approaching closer. He looked tense and uncomfortable. He wasn’t his usual self. “Are you alright?”

He managed a small smile. “Says the girl in the hospital bed.”

“We’ve been worried,” Matt said, taking my hand in his.

I glanced at Zach again and noticed that his jaw tightened as his eyes settled on Matt’s hand on me.Is he jealous?

“I’m fine now,” I said. “Just waiting on the all clear so I can get out of here.”

The curtain opened again and the nurse walked back in. “Which you’ll have in a few hours if everything still looks good.” She glanced at the twins. “Which is what I told your mother.”

“She can be very insistent,” Matt said.

“I don’t recall her checking on Ms. Winters last time she was in here,” the nurse grumbled.

“Really, I’m fine,” I said. There was so much more I wanted to say to both of them, but now wasn’t the time.

“This is my fault,” Zach said.

“How is this your fault? You weren’t even there,” I said.

“No, but Delores seemed to think that she and I were in a relationship and seemed to think you were a threat,” he said.

“Oh, that,” I said.

“Yeah, that,” he said.

“So this whole thing was over a male?” The nurse tutted. “Waste of time if you ask me.”

“I set her straight, if that helps,” Zach said. “Told her there’s nothing between us.”

My chest tightened and I felt like the wind had been knocked from my lungs.Nothing between us?How could he say that? It was true that I hadn’t explored my relationship with him as much as I had with Matt, but now that I knew what could be, I didn’t want to lose it.

“I told her she and I were never going to work. That my heart belonged elsewhere,” he added.

I took a relieved breath.

“You have to let me make it up to you,” he said.

“That’s great, very sweet,” the nurse said. “But you two are going to get me in a heap of trouble. You can make out later.”

Before I even got to reply to him, the nurse shooed them both beyond the curtain.
