Something clanked from the back room and the light under the door went out. I moved into the room. “Professor? Is that you?”

Silence.

I walked toward the storage closet. “Sorry I missed yesterday, are you there?”

Just as I reached for the doorknob, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I gasped and turned, my heart nearly leaping into my throat.

I blew out a received breath when I saw Professor Halifax standing in front of me. “It’s just you.” My heart raced, not getting the memo that the threat was unwarranted.

She frowned. “What are you doing here, Ms. Winters?”

“I woke up early,” I said.

“So you thought you’d intrude on my prep time?” She asked.

“Um,” I wasn’t sure how to respond to that. I glanced over my shoulder toward the closet where I’d heard all the noises. Now I wasn’t even sure it had been real.

“Ms. Winters?” Professor Halifax asked.

I looked back at her. “I’m sorry. I came to see what I could do to make up yesterday’s lesson.”

She pursed her lips and her eyes flicked down then back up, as if examining me. “You seem in good health.”

“I am now,” I agreed.

“Good. We’ll have a double lesson today. You’ll stay through your lunch period.” She lifted her chin toward the door. “Be off with you.”

“Thanks, I’ll see you later,” I said, feeling super awkward. Quickly, I made my way back to my dorm. Maybe I’d just wake up Makayla and get a head start on breakfast next time I woke up early.
