Em grins. “Then be prepared for zero sex life while you’re here. They’re all assholes.”

“Fine by me,” I say.

“She’s going to be gone before the week is up,” Tasha says.

“Maybe,” Em says, narrowing her eyes.

“Look, I don’t want any shit with either of you. I just want to get through this, okay?”

“Oh, I get it now,” Tasha says. “You think you’re going to win the pass?” She laughs and Em joins in.

“It’s cute when reforms think they have a chance, isn’t it?” Em says.

I shake my head. “Look, I got to go. I have class.”

Em stretches out her arm, blocking me in on one side and Tasha blocks me in on the other. “Not so fast,” Em says. She turns to her friend. “What do you think? Maybe a little curse before we go?”

“Oh, fuck no,” I say. I’ve had my share of magic used against me today already and I’m still not even sure I believe in magic. I push through them and one of them grabs a handful of my hair and pulls me back toward the wall.

I kick backward, nailing whoever had a hold of me and the hand releases. I spin around and pull back my fist, ready to punch the bitch.

“Hey, what’s going on here?” A voice calls.

I freeze, fist tense and ready to punch. I know that voice.

Em and Tasha step away from me and I lower my arm. Adrian is standing in the hall, an annoyed look on his handsome face.

“Nothing,” Em says. “Just teaching the new girl a few things about Brimstone.”

“Right,” he says. “Why don’t you two get to class. I’ll take over. No need for you to be late.”

To my surprise, they both turn and walk away. I wait till they’re out of sight and then turn back to Adrian. It’s the two of us alone in the empty hallway and I’m instantly drawn to his eyes. His gaze sends flutters right to my core and I hate myself for how he makes me feel.

“I had it under control,” I say.

“Sure you did,” he says.

I want nothing more than to walk away from him but there’s something keeping me there, rooted to the spot. My mind is telling me to run but my body is reacting in a way beyond my control.

“What, no thank you?” he asks.

“I told you, I had it covered,” I say.

He shakes his head. “I have my work cut out for me keeping you alive for a little while.”

I would argue with him, but I’m starting to understand all the doom and gloom. So far, I’ve not been faring well on my own. But I’d never admit that out loud. Plus, there’s that whole mind reading thing.Fuck.

“I heard that,” he says. “Come on, I’ll show you to your next class.”

“Divination?” I ask.

“This way,” he says. When he walks past me, I’m hit with the scent of sandalwood and smoke. Damn. He smells sexier than he looks.

He glances back at me and smirks. My cheeks heat. It is impossible not to think about him. “You know, the whole mind reading thing isn’t really fair.”

“It’s not my choice,” he says. “You’re a loud broadcaster.”

“What the hell does that mean?” I ask as I run to catch up to him.
