Harper

I tugmy black tee shirt over my head and then grab the jeans from my wardrobe. It’s the only outfit I have that’s not a uniform so it’ll have to do.

“Harper, you have a visitor,” Sadie calls.

Curious, I open my door and peek out into our common room. One of the twins is standing in front of the door. I really need to figure out a way to tell them apart.

“You ready?” he asks.

“I didn’t realize you were picking me up,” I say.

“I can’t have you bailing on a promise,” he says with a smile. It’s a sweet smile. Not the cocky smirk. I know right then I’m looking at Corbin.

“You coming too?” he asks Sadie.

“I’ll meet you two there,” she says.

“Do you need more time?” Corbin asks me.

“I’m good,” I say as I close my bedroom door.

“See you soon,” Sadie says as she darts back into her room.

I frown after her. I’d rather not be going to this party without her but there is no way I’d ruin her date.

Corbin opens the door for us and I walk past him, catching the scent of something slightly spicy. Cloves, maybe?

“Any tips for me this time?” I ask. “I’m not sure your friends approve of me all that much.”

“Em, you mean,” he says.

“Mostly,” I agree. She does try her best to glare at me whenever I see her. A few times she’d tried to correct me in class but when the teacher had sided with me, she stopped trying.

“She’s just mad because you’ve got Damon’s attention,” he says.

“Ex-girlfriend?” I ask.

“Never,” he says. “But thinks she’s got a shot with him. Spoiler alert, she doesn’t.”

I’m not sure why that makes me so happy. She’s terrible and Damon isn’t much better. “They might be a good couple.”

“Can you imagine the spawn they’d create? We can’t let that happen.” He laughs, which sets me more at ease. Corbin seems to be the opposite of his brother and I think we could be friends. Maybe even more.

“Is this a date?” I blurt out.

Corbin stops walking and his cheeks turn pink. “Could be.”

I extend my hand. “Alright.”

He grins and accepts my hand. The two of us walk silently down the hall. There’s tension between us that seems innocent and sweet. I can tell he wants to impress me and he wants me to feel comfortable. It’s been a while since I’ve been around a man who was so aware of how he was making me feel. Who knew I’d have to go all the way to the Underworld to find a nice guy?

Strings of fairy lights form a canopy like twinkling stars over the garden. Tables covered with silver and gold fabric are covered in plates of food. Servers in black tuxedos walk around with trays of champagne.

Other students walk around the manicured lawn in cocktail dresses and suits. I glance at Corbin and notice that he’s in black slacks and a white button down shirt. I just thought he’d worn his uniform out for the night.

I’m extremely under dressed.
