I shoot her a warning glare and she covers her mouth as she lets out a giggle.

“I think that’s enough for today,” Adrian says. “You’re all dismissed.”

I can feel the stares of my classmates as everyone walks back to collect their belongings.

“Don’t ever do that again,” Adrian says.

“Why could I access it today?” I ask.

“I’m not sure,” he says.

“Is it because of what you told me?” I ask, keeping my voice quiet.

His jaw tenses. We haven’t had a chance to discuss what beingmatesmeans for us.

He moves closer to me and I breathe in his scent. It sends a shiver straight to my core. I thought I could handle waiting for him. While he was away during break, I could pretend that we would be able to go back to the way things were. Being this close to him changes things. It’s taking all of my willpower to keep my hands to myself.

I look up into his violet eyes and I can see that he’s struggling just as much as me. How can we do this to ourselves? It isn’t fair to either of us.

“You need to be smarter,” he says. “Or you’re never going to get out of here alive.”

I bite down on my lip to keep myself from saying anything.

“I’ll see you tonight,” he says. Then he turns away and walks toward the door.

I blow out a breath and work to regain a sense of control. I know I have to keep my pants on. I know we can’t be together right now. But that’s going to be damn near impossible.

Adrian holds the door open as everyone files out. Sadie waits near the door for me and I hurry to grab my things and catch up to her.

“No shortage of drama on the first day, huh?” she says.

“I get the feeling we’re at the tip of the iceberg in the drama department,” I say.
