“What plans?” I ask.

“The binding. We can’t have one royal with that much power,” Aunt Lucinda says.

I look over at Harper. Her hands are balled into fists and I reach for one of her hands. She’s trembling. I can feel the anger rolling off her.

“You did it,” she says.

“Harper,” I say, but my aunt holds up her hand and I stop talking.

“Yes, I killed your mother,” she says. “But I assure you, I didn’t want to. I had no choice. And to atone for what I did, I tried to protect you.”

“You killed my mother,” Harper says. “You can’t atone for that.”

“I tried,” she says. “But I failed. Because now you’re here. And all that I did was for nothing.”

I stand and move in front of Harper. “You’re not going to touch her.”

My aunt stands. “Your father will be able to control the entire Underworld if he binds his magic with hers. He won’t stop there. It will mean a war unseen since the Fae wars. I can’t have that.”

“I won’t let you kill her,” Liam says.

“You have another way? Something else that will get him off the throne?” My aunt looks past me and locks her eyes on Harper. Fear spikes in my chest. There is one way. One thing that will send my father packing. And Harper knows what it is. All she has to do is tell my aunt that I’m not a blood heir.

My father will be removed from his throne and likely take his anger out on me. I’ll lose everything. But Harper would be free.
