Elias’s hands were getting warmer. “Now.”

I closed my eyes and tried to find the source, the place I’d accidentally activated before. To my surprise, a flicker of heat appeared in my chest. I concentrated on it, willing it to grow, to move through my arms and into my hands.

A rush of warmth spread down my arms and I opened my eyes in time to see the flames appear around our clasped hands.

Elias was looking down at the stone, his expression focused. I took steady breaths, trying to maintain an even flow of the fire I was creating.

My eyes widened as a circle of yellow green flames encompassed the stone, tongues of fire flickering and licking the air. With each breath, it seemed like the circle grew smaller, closing in around the stone.

Elias spoke, mumbling words I didn’t recognize. Probably demonic. Whatever else was needed to complete the spell.

I felt the tiniest bit of hope as the flames closed in on the stone, creating a sphere of fire around it. Elias stopped talking and the flames vanished into a few tendrils of smoke.

It sat there in-between us. A harmless looking rock.

Hopeful that we’d pulled it off, I looked up at Elias with a grin on my face. His brow was furrowed as he continued to stare at the stone. I looked back down just as the glow returned to the rock.

I could feel the hum of power radiating from it.

“No,” I said.

Elias sighed. “It didn’t work.”

My shoulders fell and I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. We needed this to work. I needed this to be done. I was tired of being hunted and chased and I couldn’t spend my whole life on the run to protect this thing.

“What now?” I asked.

“We need another demon,” Elias said. “And I think I might know how we can find one.”

My heart thundered against my ribs.Another demon.I thought back to my last encounter with David. His smug face, his closeness; the desire to join forces.

I shook my head. No. David was trying to take the stone. We couldn’t risk that.

“I was with Cain tonight,” he said.

Jealousy tightened in my chest like a vise. “Wait, that’s how you found out about the necklace?”

“Not romantically,” he clarified. “Yes. But she called me with news about my sister. I’m not sure if I can trust it knowing that she’s involved, but if it’s true, we might have the help we need.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“She showed me a video of my sister,” Elias said. His voice was so quiet that I held my breath so I could hear him better.

“I think it was real,” he continued. “I think she’s alive.”

“How is that possible?” I moved closer to him and set my hand on his arm. “All these years of searching.”

He turned away from me and ran a hand through his hair. I could tell he was frustrated. I couldn’t blame him. This was a lot. He’d come here looking for his sister and had stayed to avenge her death. His entire purpose was wrapped up in this.

I dropped my hand, not sure if my touch was helping or hurting. “I want her to be alive. I do. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but could Cain be using old footage or trying to trick you?”

He turned around and his eyes found mine. “She could, but I don’t think she would.”

“She’s after the stone and she knows you’re part of protecting it. Part of protecting me,” I said.

“She’s been trying to forge a marriage between us since we met,” he admitted. “If she lied about my sister, she’d be ruining any chance at that. Even though I’ve told her it’s not going to happen, I think she still wants it.”

I tensed and balled my hands into fists. Not only was this woman trying to kill me, she was trying to take Elias from me. Rage bubbled inside me and I imagined myself putting a stake through her heart.
