“If she did, she’s declared war on my realm,” Elias said.

“There’s a lot of that going around lately,” I said. “The question is, what’s the bigger problem? The queen or the stone? Because if your sister is alive, we have to help her.”

“That stone is like a ticking time bomb,” Xander said.

“I can’t risk Clara’s life over this thing,” I said. “It already cost Lola.”

“We could hide you,” Xander said. “Get out of town for a while.”

“They’ll find her,” Elias said. “David will find her.”

“If he’s going to find me anyway, why delay it?” I asked.

“Because you don’t know him like I do. Even if we could convince him to help us, there’s nothing to stop him from turning on us,” Elias said.

“What happened between you two?” I asked.

“I’m not getting into my past right now,” he said.

“We don’t have a choice,” Xander said. “If he can find her, we can either get him on our side or kill him.”

For some reason, the thought of trying to kill David sent a cold chill down my spine. I didn’t want him dead. It was a complete conflict with how I felt about the assassin and it freaked me out.

Shaking off the feeling, I turned to Elias. “Xander is right. We’re better off trying to get to him on our terms. He’s expecting me to show up at the mortuary soon. He’ll be waiting there.”

“You’re not going to that meeting,” Elias said.

“What do you propose?” I asked.

“We’ll go,” Elias said. “The two of us can subdue him. Find out what he knows.”

“I’m not facing off against his guard dogs again,” Xander said.

“I can handle them,” Elias said.

“So the plan is that you two go to the place where I’m supposed to meet him alone and I wait like a princess in a tower?” I crossed my arms over my chest. “What if I go in and you two stand back up for me? I was hunting assholes myself without the two of you just fine.”

“She has a point,” Xander said.

“You can both feel me,” I said. “I’ll be fine. If he tries something, you come in and help me. I’ve been alone with him twice and he has yet to hurt me. Why would he start now?”

“You’re right. He does seem to be keen on helping you rather than harming you,” Xander said. “What do your instincts tell you?”

I took a deep breath and thought of my interactions with David. He’d said a lot of things. But he’d never done anything to harm me. In fact, he’d been more than clear about his more carnal attentions based on his actions. And he’d saved my life last time we met. If he wanted me dead, he could have let that dart hit me. “He won’t hurt me. I’m certain.”

“If he tries anything…” Xander said.

“I’ll kick him in the balls and run. Is that what you want to hear?” I asked.

Xander laughed. “For his sake, I hope he doesn’t try anything. I have a feeling that’s the least of what you could do.”

“You two need to trust me. This is our best option. If we can convince him to help, maybe we can accomplish both goals. Get rid of the stone and have another set of eyes on a search for Clara.” I set my hand on Elias’s arm. “I can do this.”

“Fine,” Elias said. “We try your way.”

“Thank you,” I said as I turned the car back on. “Just don’t go too far, okay?”

“After seeing what you did to that assassin, I’m more worried about what’ll happen to him if he crosses you,” Xander said.
