“It’s a master moonstone. You can use it to make more.”

“You have got to be fucking kidding me.” I turned away from him and ran my hands through my hair in frustration. I was stuck here, trapped till morning, while Elias and Xander were walking targets.

It wasn’t just a few random vampires after them. It was the queen. The one supernatural in a hundred miles you didn’t want to cross.

I turned around and looked at David. “What do you want the stone for? You’ve been after it since we first met and I don’t trust you.”

“The queen asked for it as payment for information,” he said.

My eyes widened and I took a step back from him. “If you’re on her side, you’re against me. She can’t have that stone.”

“I know that now,” he said. “Before, I didn’t care what she did with it. This isn’t my realm.”

“What changed?” I asked.

“Turns out there are some interesting people who live here,” he said. “Besides, if my sister is alive, I need time to find her. I can’t do that if the queen is mass producing moonstones and turning the shifters into her own private army.”

“Oh, that old ploy, huh?” The whole thing had gotten to the point where it was bigger than I could have imagined. I spent my whole life trying to stay out of supernatural politics. How the fuck did I end up in the middle of this mess?

“Are you going to join my team now?” I asked.

“Do I have a choice?” he asked.

“I don’t think so,” I said. “Please tell me you know how to destroy that stone.”

“I know how to destroy it,” he said.

“Are we really stuck here till morning?” I asked.

“Afraid so,” he said with his usual seductive tone. “I can think of a few things we can do to pass the time, if that’s your concern.”

“I think I’ll sleep,” I said.

“Want some company?” he asked.

“Absolutely not,” I said as I walked back to the bedroom. It was all too familiar. Me telling off an interested male while I shut myself away.

My libido was practically clawing at my insides. Would it be so bad to decompress a little with a few orgasms while you’re stuck here?Down, girl.David might be on my side for now, but I had no way of knowing if he was playing me to get what he wanted.

I paused in the threshold and focused on Elias and Xander. I was certain they’d tried to enter the mortuary by now and were probably worried sick. I sent a few thoughts their way. I wasn’t sure if they could hear me or feel me through the wards.I’m safe but I’m stuck here a while. I’ll see you in the morning. Please don’t worry about me.

Quietly, I listened, with my eyes closed. After several long moments, all I had was silence.

I hoped wherever they were, they were safe.

Suddenly, David grabbed hold of my wrist. “You’re not going to sleep.”
