“I still can’t believe he and Bryan—”

“Did somebody say my name?” Out of nowhere, Bryan slung his arm around Ashleigh’s shoulder and grinned at us.

“Is it possible to love yourself any less?” she grumbled.

“You’re talking to high school football royalty, baby.” He flashed her a toothy grin.

“God, make it stop.” She swatted him away, shirking out of his hold. “I need a drink.”

“Your loss,” he called after her.

“You’re such a goofball,” I said.

“But you dig it, right?”

“I…”

“Ouch. She hesitated.” He fell back against the couch, clutching his heart and pretending to be wounded.

“I told you already, you’re punching above your weight with Peyton, bro,” Aaron winked at me. “You should lower your expectations to somebody else. Someone like… Carrie-Anne, for example.”

Bryan shot up, frowning. “Seriously? That is never going to happen. Not in a million years. She’s… annoying.”

“Have you met you?” Kaiden chuckled.

“I think there’s more to her than meets the eye,” I added, and everyone looked at me.

“Oh shit,” Bryan gawked at me, “tell me you didn’t invite her tomorrow in some lame attempt to set me up with—”

“What? No!” I lied. “As if I’d ever do that.”

“Good,” his eyes darkened, narrowing right on me, “because I’m not interested in her.”

He didn’t finish his sentence out loud, but I saw the words written on his face.

I’m interested in you.
