People came and went from the hall leading to the bathrooms, and at the end, a fire exit led to the dark alley. The alley I had every intention of going to smoke in.

I slowed right by the door to the women’s bathroom, making a show of retrieving my packet of smokes. My other hand dangled at my side and I felt Peyton brush her fingers against it as she whispered, “it didn’t mean anything.”

Relief slammed into me.

I hadn’t realized how much I’d needed her to say the words until that moment.

I didn’t dare look at her. If I did, I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist pulling her into the alley with me. Pushing her up against the wall and kissing her the way I’d imagined ever since watching Bryan put his mouth on her.

Peyton lingered, her hand still brushing up against mine.

One of us needed to move. The second voices reached the hall, I broke away, striding for the fire exit. I burst through the door and slipped into the shadows, lighting up my smoke.

What the fuck was I doing?

Everyone we knew was here tonight. Every single person. I needed to keep my distance.

I needed to—

The door swung open again and she stood there, wide-eyed and breathless.

“You can’t be out here,” I said, dropping my smoke to the ground as I stalked toward her.

Peyton met me halfway, gazing up at me with so much intensity, it was like she’d reached into my chest and fisted my heart.

“I had to see you,” she breathed.

“If anyone saw you come out here.”

“They didn’t.” Peyton slid her hands up my chest. “I waited until the hall was empty.”

Smart girl.

But it didn’t change the fact that anyone could stumble across us out here.

“I didn’t kiss him back.”

“I know.” I dropped my head to hers and breathed her in. “But for a second, I thought maybe you and Hughes—”

“I don’t feel that way about him.” Her eyes softened.

“I came after you. Back at the stadium, I came after you… You’ve got me all tied up in knots, Peyton.”

“I can’t stop thinking about you either… about kissing you again.” Her cheeks flushed as she stared up at me through thick lashes.

“Shit,” I rasped, my thin rope of resolve fraying. “Come here.” Grabbing her hand, I pulled Peyton further into the shadows, pressing her against the wall. Her soft laughter washed over me, her smile snapping the remainder of my control.

Caging her in with my hand against the brick, I slid my fingers along her neck and kissed her. The tiny moan that escaped her lips was like a siren’s call and I erased the distance between us, fitting the hard line of my body against her soft curves.

Why did this feel so right?

Why did she feel so right?

The questions flew out of my head when Peyton dipped her hands under my sweater and ran them up my chest.

Jesus. Her touch was like kryptonite, threatening to bring me to my knees.

“Peyton,” I murmured, licking her mouth, curling my tongue around hers and kissing her deeper.
