“You made a reservation?” Her eyes twinkled with excitement.

“Kind of. You’ll see. Do you have gloves?”

“No, I didn’t—”

“I have a spare pair.” I’d picked up some earlier from the store down the block. They were only cheap, but they would do the trick.

“A date,” Peyton sighed. “A real date… I’m nervous.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re… you, and I’m—”

“Perfect.” And I’m so fucking gone for you.

I kissed her, taking the hat from her hand and pulling it over her blonde waves. “You’re going to need this.”

Peyton eyed me carefully, the air crackling around us. “What are you up to, Xander?”

Disguising the wild thud of my heart, the way my palms turned clammy, with bravado, I smirked and said, “You’ll see.”

“This is…I don’t even know what to say.” Peyton snuggled into my side as we got comfortable on our loveseat, pulling the blanket up around us.

Another twenty-nine loveseats littered the flat rooftop of The Heights at Halston, each bedecked with a heat lamp, cushions, blankets, and a dark canopy providing the perfect amount of privacy.

“How did you even find out about this place?” She peeked up at me, blonde locks spilling out of her hat. It was cold out, bitter. But it only added to the ambience of the rooftop movie night. They were screening a holiday classic, and although it wasn’t my movie of choice, I suspected Peyton would love it.

“Can I get you both a drink?” A server arrived at our loveseat.

“Hot chocolate for me please.” Peyton glanced up from the menu card. “Xander?”

“Make it two. And we’ll take a bucket of popcorn.”

“Coming right up.”

“This is so cool. I’ve never been to anything like this before.” Peyton’s excitement was infectious, and I relaxed against the soft cushions with a smile.

When I’d stumbled across the listing for the rooftop movie night, it had seemed like the perfect solution to our predicament. It was romantic but afforded us a measure of privacy most other date night activities wouldn’t.

Besides, it meant I could get up close and personal with her, so it was a win-win.

Peyton leaned up and scraped her fingers over my jaw, kissing me there. “Thank you.”

“I’m sorry it’s not a romantic dinner at some swanky restaurant.”

“Ssh. I don’t need any of that.” Her lips ghosted over mine, and my eyes scanned the rooftop. Our loveseat was tucked away in the back, enveloped in shadows except for the faint flicker of the tiki torch marking the front of each loveseat. We were as good as alone.

I curled my hand around Peyton’s neck and held her as I deepened the kiss, plunging my tongue into her mouth.

“I know nobody can see us,” she whispered against my lips, “but it feels… illicit.”

“We can always stop.” My brow rose.

Her eyes glittered in the dark. “No, I like it.” Peyton dove back in, the sounds of our kisses drowned out by the opening credits of the movie.

Approaching footsteps made me pull back, touching my head to hers. “You make me so fucking hot,” I whispered.
