“He put his mouth on you. Of course I’m jealous.”

“He’s my friend, Xander.”

“I know, but you’ve been with him. Do you have any idea how crazy that makes me?”

“Wait a minute, you know about that?” I blinked, confused. I’d never told him about that.

“It’s pretty obvious.” His lips thinned.

“Why have you never brought this up before?”

“I didn’t want to come on too strong.”

“And now?” My brow lifted as I fought a smile.

“Now I want to stamp my name on your body, so everyone knows who you belong to.”

“Neanderthal.”

“With you? Always.” Xander slid his hand along the side of my neck, gently collaring me, and kissed me.

“We should get back,” I said, breaking the kiss first. He let out a frustrated sigh.

“Yeah, okay.”

“Thank you, for tonight. It was perfect.”

He brushed his thumb over my lips, staring at me with such intensity I could hardly breathe. “Yeah, well, you’re worth it.”

The next morning,I found Poppy and her mom in the kitchen.

“How was your date with Bryan?” she asked, and Poppy snickered.

“It wasn’t a date. We’re just friends.”

“Well, I think it’s lovely that you two spend so much time together.”

Her words made me flinch. “He’s a good guy,” I said, avoiding her searching gaze. Poppy caught my eye though, and smirked.

Since Bryan and I had been spending so much time together, I figured they all thought more was going on than either of us were willing to admit. But no one pushed me for answers.

“You have to work the long shift today?”

“Yeah,” I replied, grabbing a banana from the fruit bowl. “Ten until four.”

“Too bad,” Poppy said. “We’re going to hang out at Sofia’s.”

“Maybe I’ll stop by after.”

“I bet Bryan would like that.” The corner of her mouth lifted. I balled up a napkin and threw it at her.

“Girls,” her mom scolded. “I’m at the center all day, but if you need a ride, call Jase. He should be home by three. Although looking at the weather, I’m not sure how much practice they’ll get in.”

Rixon had woken to a blanket of fluffy white snow, but it wasn’t enough to stop the town dead in its tracks.

“You know they’ll spend all day in the clubhouse drinking and playing pool,” Poppy said.
