You didn’t.

“You weren’t in the wrong, Myers. Coach Chase is the adult here. He should have known better.”

“I knew what I was doing, Bryan.” I was equally as responsible for every kiss and every touch we’d shared. I’d wanted it. I’d wanted everything from a man who was never supposed to be mine.

And I’d made the foolish mistake of thinking he felt the same.

A fresh wave of tears burned the backs of my eyes. Bryan noticed and cussed under his breath, reaching over to pull me into his arms. “I’m so fucking sorry,” he whispered.

“Yeah, me too.” My hands curled into his hoodie.

“You know, I think it’s a crock of shit what he said to you… I spoke to him that day. I saw the look in his eyes. He cares about you, Peyton.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

Because it wasn’t enough.

Iwasn’t enough.

“So you’re really going to do it? You’re going to graduate early?”

I peeked up at him and nodded. “If they’ll give me permission, yeah.”

“I’m gonna miss you, Myers.” His gaze darkened.

“You won’t get rid of me that easy.”

He wouldn’t be around forever though. He, Lily, Kaiden, and Ashleigh would go off to college and start the next phase of their lives. But I couldn’t dwell on that.

I wouldn’t.

“You’ll get through this, you know?” He held me at arm’s length. “You’re so fucking strong and I know you don’t want to believe it yet, but one day you’ll find the right guy to sweep you off your feet.”

I gave him a thin smile. I didn’t want to tell him that I’d already found that. That Xander was my person. Because he didn’t want to hear it, nobody did.

And maybe they were all right.

Maybe it was time to accept the truth.

Xander was gone…

And he wasn’t coming back.
