His eyes narrowed. “I’ll write your recommendation.”

“You will?”

“What happened doesn’t change the fact that you were good with the team, with the guys. You’ve always had so much potential. Xander. You just couldn’t look past your own pain to see it. Send me the details, and I’ll get it done.”

“Thank you.”

“Does this mean you won’t be coming back to Rixon any time soon?”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, do you?”

Something flashed in his expression, but I ignored it. Whatever he wanted to say, nothing good could come of it. The damage was done.

I couldn’t even bring myself to ask him how she was.

“Do you want to stay for something to eat? I was going to order in.”

“I can’t tonight, but maybe another time.”

“Yeah, sure.” It came out tight as I realized the bridge between us might be too damaged to ever fully repair.

He leaped off the stool and headed for the door, texting someone.

“It was good to see you, Xander.”

“Yeah, you too.”

My cell pinged and I frowned, snatching it off the counter. “What’s this?” I asked, as he reached the door.

“It’s the details of Peyton’s graduation dinner.”

“I don’t understand.” My expression hardened, the mention of her name a burden too big to bear.

“You should come,” he said quietly, as if he didn’t want to say the words.

“Why?” My voice trembled.

“Because you’re family… and despite everything, she’d want you there.”
