“Yeah, but I didn’t know… it doesn’t matter. Can we talk for a minute?”

I was on my way to the library. Lily, Poppy, and Sofia had taken their lunch to the football field to watch the guys’ final practice before their big game tomorrow. But I’d made up some excuse about having a paper to finish.

“Uh, sure. Okay.” I motioned to a quiet alcove and she followed me in.

“I know you saw my parents last weekend at Cindy’s, and I just wanted to explain…” She flushed. “Wow, okay, this is so awkward. I… I don’t exactly have many friends, but you probably know that already. My mom worries, but whatever. It’s not like I care.” There was something in her eyes that told me she probably did care.

“Anyway, I mentioned that I sit next to you and Bryan in a couple of classes, and she kind of latched onto it, and she seemed so relieved that I’d made some new friends that I kind of let her believe it.”

“That’s… I don’t know what to say to that.” It was kind of sad and more than a little bit weird.

But strangely, I got it too.

“You like him.”

“What?” Her cheeks burned.

“Bryan, you like him.”

“I-I don’t… he’s a dumb jock.”

My brow quirked up. “So you didn’t go to the game last Saturday to watch him?”

“No,” she whisper-shrieked. “I went with my cousin because he’s a huge football fan.”

“Funny story, your mom told me you’re the huge fan.”

“Dammit,” she muttered under her breath.

“Relax,” I smirked, “I’m not going to tell him.”

“He doesn’t even know I exist.” Sadness crept into her expression. “Not when he only sees you…” Carrie-Anne trailed off and a pang of guilt flashed through me.

“It’s not like that between us. We’re friends.”

“But he wants more.”

“Guys are funny things. They usually want what they can’t have. But Bryan thinks you hate him. Piece of advice. Maybe if he knew you were into him, he’d feel differently.”

“No. No way.” She shook her head, panic glittering in her eyes.

“Fine. Are you going to the game tomorrow?” An idea struck me.

“I don’t have a ticket.”

“I can probably get you one, if you want to come?”

“I… I don’t have anyone to go with.”

“You can come with me and my friends. There’ll be a party afterwards.” One I hadn’t decided if I would go to, but I couldn’t avoid my friends forever. And maybe Carrie-Anne would be a good buffer.

“Why would you do that for me?”

“Because I know what it’s like to feel like you don’t fit in. And because Bryan is a good guy.”

He deserved to find his happy ending.

“Okay. I’ll come.”
