“Maddie, are you sure everything’s all right? Your text sounded frantic, but now you look like you’re really happy about something. I feel like there’s got to be something more going on than you’ve told me. If it’s personal or whatever, you don’t have to get into it. I just want to know that you’re okay.”

“I promise you, I’m fine now,” I told him. “You really don’t need to worry about me.”

He tipped his head to one side. “The other guys aren’t putting any pressure on you about the whole multiple boyfriends thing?”

That question was so unrelated to what was on my mind that I laughed. “No, they seem to be coming around pretty well. They don’t hate the idea, anyway.”

“So they’ll get over the fact that I swooped in on ‘their’ girl?”

I shot him an amused look, although my good humor dwindled when I remembered how Slade had questioned me about Beckett’s work the other day. “Technically I started dating you before any of them. And they’ll warm up to you, I’m sure. They’ve been best friends for years, and adding someone new to the group will be difficult for them.”

“They added you.”

I shrugged. “I’m not exactly new to them. We went to high school together. And obviously that’s different. We’ll have to get all five of us together more often so you can get to know each other better.”

I pushed open the door and stepped out. I hadn’t had the chance to close it again before my name reached my ears.

“Maddie!”

My head jerked around at the strangely urgent shout. The three Vigil guys were marching toward us, all of their expressions stormy.

My heart skipped a beat. Had something gone wrong? Had the people we’d been investigating struck out at us again?

“Hey,” Beckett said in greeting, raising a tentative hand. The hostile vibe the other guys were giving off couldn’t have been lost on him.

Logan ignored him, striding right up to me and grabbing my arm. As he pulled me away from Beckett’s car, Slade and Dexter stepped between us and Beckett.

“What’s going on?” I sputtered as Logan dragged me right to the edge of the parking lot.

“Take your hands off her,” Beckett said in a terse voice, coming around the car. “You can’t push her around like—”

“You shut up,” Logan snapped, his tone so vicious that my whole body went rigid.

“Stay the hell away from her,” Slade said in an equally ominous voice, the muscles in his shoulders flexing.

“Will someone please tell me what you’ve gone crazy about?” I said, raising my voice. “Or I’m going to start screaming for help, and you’re going to have to explain it to a lot more people than just me.”

Dexter glanced back at me, the worry in his eyes making me even more frightened. Then Logan spoke, low and fierce.

“We’ve found out why we’re having so much trouble looking into your dad’s death. Beckett’s family is behind it, and he’s been covering their tracks all along.”
